Speaking to God
It is important that we speak to God in our own way, God knows what
is in our hearts, so whether we speak a well-loved verse; a few sentences strung
together in need, or don’t speak at all, it really doesn’t matter. St Paul, in his
letter to the Thessalonians, tells them to pray unceasingly. They were a working
community, like us, how did he expect them to find the time to sit and pray? He didn’t,
what Paul wanted was for the community to know and experience a faith that brought
them into a constant awareness of God. Prayer is experience of God; even when we
think He isn’t listening, even when we think He doesn’t answer, the very faith that
makes us pray is a growing towards Him. It is the makings of a personal relationship
with a God who loves us.To help us in developing this awareness, we do need time
and space to make and deepen our relationship. Like the Sunday evening phone call
to the friend who has moved abroad or the morning text message to your child at university,
you love these people and these gestures let them know that. We support and encourage
the gestures of prayer in many ways.
