Cardiff Yacht Club is probably the friendliest yacht club in the Bristol channel or even the world. We extend a warm welcome to young, old, rich, poor etc etc. |
|
|
Cardiff
Yacht Club was founded in 1900 with the club meeting in the Avondale Hotel,
Clarence Road, Butetown. The Marquis of Bute, who owned the docks, presented
silver cups to the winners of the races held at the annual reviews and
regattas. These cups are currently in the safe keeping of the Cardiff
County Council.

We
are run on a voluntary non-profit making basis, and believe that all forms
of boating should be affordable for local people in Cardiff Bay. We do
not want to become a restricted centre for excellence but to allow members
to participate in any level of activity that suits them. We also want
to ensure that the traditional community activities can be retained so
that our sport can be enjoyed by local people and visitors.

The old clubhouse was built by members from a prefabricated building in 1958 and extended in 1981. The new clubhouse was opened in 2001 and is currently up and running. We now have a new slipway and hoist which are ready to go. This operation was organised and mainly buillt by members. The club is a freeholder of 2.4 acres of land and has a covenant for 40 years which stops us trading for profit. |

| This photo was obviously taken while it was still under construction. It has now been shored up on the sides and has been used to get boats out of the water. A space has also been cleared for a hard standing. We're getting there! | |
