Will Hay

1888-1949

Ben Elton George Formby Stephen Fry Tony Hancock Will Hay Benny Hill Frankie Howard Rod Hull

The start of this information came from http://homepage.ntlworld.com/trevor.buckingham/willhay.htm He has a great site devoted to this fine old style comedian.

Will Hay was born in 1888 and started in music hall in the early part of the century. His gift for entertaining and comic sketches soon bought him fame. Most of what I remember about Will Hay comes from the films that he made in the 1920's. He died the year after I was born, in 1949, so of course I have only see him in films. My son is a fan of his, and in fact has all his films on a DVD collection.

He made eighteen films, and I do not intend to put them all in here. This site is not intended to be a copy of the excellent site above, but a short memory of some very funny people. However, do remember 'Oh Mr Porter' and the 'Ghost of St Michaels' very well as well as some of his other very funny films.

In short, Will Hay was of his time regarded as a comic genius. Other after him such as Arthur Askey as Charlie Chaplin have perhaps become more well known as famous, but Will was one of a kind.
