I remember George mainly from his films. He made 21 of them and
230 records. His main instrument was the ukulele and with the cheeky
songs like 'with my little stick of Blackpool rock' and 'Leaning on
a Lamppost' and the 'Window Cleaner' all in the North Eastern
accent that he was famous for he was one of the most highly paid
entertainers in the UK.
He entertained the troops during the war a lot, and became even
more famous if that were possible. He died at the age of 56 just a
year after the death of his wife of Leukaemia of a heart attack. The
funeral was attended by 100,000 people who mourned the death of the
most popular entertainer of the day.
