II feel sorry for people that don't drink, because when they wake up in the morning, that’s the best they’re going to feel all day.  Bernard Manning

Arthur Askey

1900 to 1982

Russ Abbott Dave Allen Arthur Askey Rowan Atkinson Ronnie Barker Michael Bentine Bernard Bresslaw Richard Briars Roy 'Chubby'Brown

Arthur Askey was a comic that I remember quite well. http://www.britishpictures.com/stars/Askey.htm  He started on the boards of the music halls in 1924 and his short size was made up by his huge energy. His big break cam with a show called Band Waggon http://www.britishpictures.com/arch_b.html#Band%20Waggon  After a first few poor episodes, they found a format that worked, and Arthur was a star.

I do not remember Band Waggon of course, as this was a war time show, and kept the radio audiences of the UK happy for years.

I do remember seeing 'Charlies big hearted Aunt' and the 'Ghost Train' and others. By the time I was born in 1948 Arthur as a huge star.

He was a panellist on New Faces, (a talent show) in the 70's and worked as a pantomime dame for many years.

We only had radio in our home for the first ten years or so of my life, and  he would have been on there a lot, although I do remember him more for his films now, and the later TV shows.

Remember-He he who laughs last.....Really didn't get the joke anyway...
