Shackleton at South Georgia (Robert Burton, 2001). A 24-page booklet which tells the story of Shackleton's 3 visits to South Georgia, with many little known photos, and an account by the mountaineer Stephen Venables of his re-enactment of Shackleton's crossing of South Georgia. I am very proud of this booklet because I produced it by desktop publishing. I am selling it in aid of the restoration of the Stromness Villa, where Shackleton finished his crossing of South Georgia. You can obtain it from me for £3.50 (inc. p&p). |

The
World of the Hummingbird (Firefly Books, 2001) "Burton treats
complex matters with a thoroughness that
would make any scientist proud, yet with a clarity that would
captivate any lay person." Dr. H. Ross Hawkins, President of The Hummingbird
Society. "Burton's entertaining text is a great read for the
non-scientist wishing to know more about the biology of these
lovely little creatures." Ethan Temeles, Professor of
Biology, Amherst College. |

Drawn
to the Forest (Wildlife Art Gallery, 2000). This is
a Millenium celebration of the New Forest by The Society of

The
RSPB Birdfeeder Handbook (Dorling Kindersley, 1990) was
published in five European language editions and was rewritten
as The National Audubon Society North American Birdfeeder
Handbook. The revised, updated and enlarged New
RSPB Birdfeeder Handbook was published in 2000. Total sales of
all editions now top 1 million copies. |
My earliest books are:
Animals in the Antarctic (Abelard-Schuman), Animal Senses and Ponds
(David & Charles), The
Life and Death of Whales (Deutsch, two editions), The Language of Smell (Routledge, Kegan Paul), Hills and Moors and Nature by
the Roadside (Educational Publishing).
In the late 1960s, my father, Dr.
Maurice Burton, and I wrote over 300,000 words for Purnell's
Encyclopedia of Animal Life. This was a 'part-work' issued as
96 weekly magazines. It was extremely successful and was reissued
in several forms during the next decade.
