Club History

Cricket has been played in Turvey since the 19th Century. Until recently the ground was in Turvey Park supported by the Higgins and Hanbury families. The original site of the ground was in front of Turvey House running down to the river. There are references in early cricket books of 'The Gentlemen of Bedfordshire' playing the MCC in the 1870's. Games were also played against local villages including Olney during this period. The end of the First World War saw the ground move within Turvey Park to the Carlton Road. This beautiful small ground was in use until 1997 when the demands of cricket leagues requiring more concrete facilities such as showers and car parking rather than peaceful surroundings in which to relax and enjoy a leisurely game of cricket in the shade of the cedar trees. In 1949 Turvey won the a division of the Beds League with players from Turvey, Cold Brayfield and Newton Blossomville. In more modern times Turvey were runners up in the Premier Division of the Milton Keynes League. We also reached the Semifinal of the Hospital Cup. In 1998 cricket in Turvey moved onto the Recreation Ground which had been enlarged by the Recreation Association in 1996 to make the ground suitable for cricket. The Cricket Club and Recreation Association had worked together to obtain Lottery funding, which enabled improvements to the Pavilion, a cricket square and practice wicket to be laid. Turvey with these improved facilities were admitted to 'The Reyven Beds & Bucks Border League'. This League has since merged and a lot of the teams from the old Milton Keynes League have now joined. This year a cedar tree has been planted on the boundary as a reminder of the happy days of cricket in Turvey Park.
