Sanibel Island, Florida

beach The sub-tropical island of Sanibel is a unique barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico.
Not only does it have its own fresh water river, but its east-west orientation (when most islands are north-south) provides it with lots and lots of shells.
Here you'll find the best shelling beaches in North America, great biking and hiking trails and acres of wildlife sanctuaries to explore.
With miles of sandy beaches on its gulf shores
and dense mangrove forests on its bay side, Sanibel offers visitors incredibly diverse ecosystems, all within a few miles.

Almost half the island is preserved as a wildlife sanctuary.
Bowmans beach
out islands Cruise to the famous upper islands of Useppa Island, Cabbage Key, Cayo Costa and Boca Grande. Canoe or kayak through the unspoiled waterways of Tarpon Bay, where you can watch manatee and bottlenose dolphin and hundreds of varieties of birds.
Surf cast off the beach, take a charter boat for tarpon, grouper, mackerel or redfish or try your hand at backwater fishing through Sanibel's grass flats.
Bike, walk or drive the 5-mile nature trail at the J. N. "Ding" National Wildlife Refuge, a 5,000-acre sanctuary, and see spoonbill pelicans, herons, egrets, terns, white ibises, as well as alligators, turtles, armadillos and river otters.
Visit the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Center with its miles of walking trails, exhibits, marine touch tank and native plant nursery.
Shopping
theater Sanibel's winters are mild and the cooling gulf breezes and brief afternoon showers keep the summers pleasant.
Take the time to enjoy the island's two live theaters, its first run movie theatre, numerous art galleries, great shopping, live music, sports bars and local pubs.
Or fit in a few rounds of golf at one of the island's 2 great golf courses.
