What is the mono sound mix?

The mono sound mix was one of the three original sound mixes created for the initial release of Star Wars. These three original sound mixes include:

Each of these mixes had to be created separately. As a result, some things were done differently, just by chance, but also by design. The mono mix was the last mix to be completed and it featured a large number of differences--it was actually considered to be the "definitive" mix at the time. However, as more and more theaters upgraded their sound systems to Dolby, the mono sound mix received less and less exposure until it finally slipped into obscurity. Astute Star Wars fans swore the film had been changed, but they were really hearing a completely different sound mix.

The mono sound mix was also featured in the 1977 "Story of Star Wars" album, and in it several of the differences can be heard.
