Fugitives Snooker Success!!!

They’ve done it!!!

Following years of battling by both A and B teams, which have seen consistent 2nd and 3rd places, both teams have won their divisions in the 2007 – 2008 season.

It’s never been done before!

Credit must go to Tony “Twist!” O’Toole and Roy “Trigger” John. The captains have fine tuned two teams which have been virtually unchanged in recent years. Has this years success been down to the captains playing so few games themselves??!!
Solid performances throughout the year have seen players flying to victories against some opponents and battling hard against others, fighting for every point and taking the spoils of success at the final fixtures of the season.
Trophies were collected at the Tredegar Cons Club on Friday 16th May.

In the B team special mention must go to Players player Alan Jones and most improved player Jerry Connors.
Well done all.

Pictured for the B Team are:

Alan Jones is pictured leaving the stage with his Division 2 runner up trophy (he’d have look at the camera if it was the winners!)

Match Reports

FUGIES SNOOKER WINNING BEGINNING! (Friday 21st September )

The Fugies B Snooker Team opened the 2007/8 season on Friday night with a fine 5-0 win over Tredegar Cons. This was the first competitive match to be played on the newly refurbished table. The star of the show was our own Alan ‘Pretty Boy’ Jones, who with a 37 break, found his name in the South Wales Argus. Team Captain Trigger said “The table was awesome!”, so was the team Trigger.

FUGIES B BACK ON TRACK! (Friday 16th February)

After being defeated at the Redwood Club, the Fugies B team put on a solid display at home in the return match, to beat them comfortably 4 - 1. Dazzling Darryl, who only appears to feature on his home table, set the tone for the evening by trouncing N. Nener 72 - 42. Then it was the turn of 'Clever' Trevor Connors to crush C. Waters 63 - 2. Billy Connors and Wayne 'Flatfoot' Lewis made sure of the match by overcoming the doubles pairing of S.Crane and M. Taylor 57 - 24. Our only loser of the evening was Alan Jones, who was narrowly beaten by J. Hall 48 - 37. We had to wait though, for the highlight of the evening, with young Jerry Connors taking pink and black to make it a 72 - 68 last frame, and 5 points for the team. With form like this, could the league trophy be coming to NFAC?

Team: - Darryl Horner, Trevor Connors, Billy Connors, Wayne Lewis, Alan Jones, Jerry Connors, Roy John (Non playing Captain)

B TEAM RACKING UP THE WINS! (Friday 19th January)

The Fugies B team beat the Pioneer again last Friday night, this time away from home. In a less convincing 3-2 win, it was Trevor Connors who started out with a fine 74-21 win. Poor old Roy John was then beaten on the black, by 50-48. It was left at the end to the solid playing qualities of Alan Jones to clinch the winner by 52-23 points..

TEAM: -
Trevor Connors, Roy John (Captain), Billy Connors, Wayne Lewis, Jerry Connors, Alan Jones

YET ANOTHER WIN FOR THE B TEAM! (Friday 12th January)

The Fugies B team beat the Pioneer last Friday night. In a convincing 4-1 win, young Jerry Connors took the honours beating A. Allcock of the Pioneer 53-39 for his first ever league win. Dean Goddard, meanwhile, played with the master ‘Who is the Daddy’ Darryl Horner, as they ran out 72-49 winners.

TEAM: -
Billy Connors, Trevor Connors, Dean Goddard, Darryl Horner, Jerry Connors, Alan Jones, Roy John (non playing Captain)

B TEAM BACK TO WINNING FORM! (Friday 8th December)

The Fugies B team had the Alcan completely foiled last Friday night. Running out 4 – 1 winners, they added 5 points to their total (no I don’t understand the scoring system either). The outstanding performance was that of the pairs team ‘Dazzling’ Darryl Horner and ‘Pretty Boy’ Billy Connors, who ran out 82 – 36 winners. The nights unluckiest player had to be young Jerry Connors, who despite putting together a fine 36 break, was just beaten 50 -54. The man of the match award though, goes to Wayne ‘The Pain’ Lewis, who put Alcan’s Chris Cowland under the cosh, eventually grinding him into the nap 82 – 68. You can never find a policeman when you need one!
TEAM: -
Trevor Connors, Wayne Lewis, Darryl Horner, Billy Connors, Jerry Connors, Alan Jones, Roy John (non playing Captain)

FUGITIVES ON THE RUN! (Friday 17th Nov)

The Fugies A team were all wrapped up by Pockets last Friday, when they were beaten 5 – 0. No details were available at the time of writing. The B team had a night off, owing to the sad death of one of their opponents team members earlier in the week.

FINE COMEBACK BY ‘B’ TEAM (Fri 10th Nov)

After trailing 2 – 0 the Fugies ‘B’ team made a super fight back last Friday night against the Rogerstone British Legion team. The star player of the night was undoubtedly Darryl Horner. Having not played competitive snooker for some time, he eclipsed A. Hughes to take the match to a 2 – 2 tie, leaving Alan Jones the task of beating M. Croft to clinch this nail biter. This he did quite simply, running out 58 – 27 winner. Pundits were left wondering that night, is this the return of the ‘baseball capped king’?

W. Connors, J. Connors, W. Lewis, D. Goddard, D. Horner, A. Jones, R. John (Non Playing Captain)

MIXED RESULTS! (27th October)

There were mixed results from last Friday’s matches. The firsts, who were at home, had a splendid win 4 -1. Unfortunately the seconds were thrashed 5 – 0. Come on Trigger, get them into practice.
At the time of writing the team members were unknown, however the only losing first team member was the unfortunate ‘Rocket’ Ronnie Connors. Better luck next time Ronnie!

SNOOKER FUGIES WINNING BEGINNING! (20th October)

Both Fugies snooker teams got off to winning starts in this season’s Newport Leagues. The firsts, who were away from home, ran out winners 3-2. The seconds, on home territory, also won 3-2. This was a particularly good win, as the handicapping system was applied for the first time, and appeared to favour the away team, Crindau Cons..
In each match, the Fugies were giving away from 5 to 20 points.
The player of the night was surely our rising star Jerry Connors. Playing in his first league match, at the age of 14, he played extremely well, but could not overcome the handicap of giving away so many points. Although this was his debut, he had the lowest handicap of both teams. Surely that cannot be right?
At the time of writing, details of the firsts’ match are not available.
Seconds Team:-
Roy John (non playing, but victorious Captain).
Trevor Connors
Billy Connors
Jerry Connors
Alan Jones
Wayne ‘Flat Foot’ Lewis
