Useful Tips
- De-fragment your PC at least 1
per month for improved performance
- Take a copy of your most valued
data on a weekly basis and store it on CD in a safe location.
- Make sure you update your
anti-virus, adware and spyware software regularly. If you
don't you will not have maximum protection from intruders.
- Use a robust net browser
such as Firefox or Netscape Navigator. These can be downloaded for
free off the net.
Terminology
- Adware - small programs which
collect information about your surf habits for commercial purposes.
- Anti-virus
software - prevents and cleans malicious viruses - as long as its
continually kept up to date.
- Back-up - a copy of
critical/valuable data or program software kept usually on a
removable device e.g. CD or external hard-drive. The main function
of the back-up is to facilitate PC recovery and/or start-up after a
catastrophic system failure.
- De-fragment - to consolidate all
files on the main hard-drive to enable the PC to operate more
efficiently.
- Firewall - a gateway which
protects your computer from 1) external intrusions 2) accessing
dangerous web sites.
- hack - a useful procedure for
preventing and fixing known PC software problems.
- Linux - an open operating system
which is a viable alternative to MS.
- Maintenance tasks - a checklist of
procedures to carry out on a regular basis to keep your PC healthy.
- Malware - a generic description
for all types of computer viruses, bots, pop-ups,
pop-up, spyware and any software or
programs that you did not know that you had!
- Operating system - the clever
piece of software which starts your PC up controls printers, modems,
sounds etc at the mere push of a button or mouse click! XP,
Win2K, Win98, ME and Linux are all operating systems.
