REINDEER TRAINING

This is a Christmas story in which the children can pretend they are the reindeer, crawling on hands and knees, or they can simply pantomime the activities).

It was a month before Christmas, and as usual, everyone at the North; Pole was very busy. Even the reindeer were preparing by building up their strength for the long hard ride delivering presents on Christmas Eve

The reindeer woke up early, STRETCHING, SHAKING THEIR HEADS, antlers and WHOLE BODIES.

They then SWEPT their stalls and PUT DOWN fresh hay. Prancer was hungry, so one of Santa's helpers gave them some oats and water for breakfast. They CHEWED their food slowly and carefully. Dancer decided to have some fun, so she PUSHED OPEN the door with her head and MOTIONED for the others to join her.

They all SKIPPED out of the barn into the heavy snow. The deer RAN and HOPPED FIRST ON ONE FOOT, THEN ON THE OTHER and finally ON BOTH FEET. They SKIPPED from the pine trees to a brook which they LEAPED across.  The snow was so soft and fluffy that the deer SAT DOWN and ROLLED in it.

They then STOOD UP and SHOOK the snow off.  Vixen had an idea -- he wanted to play hide and seek. The rest all agreed, JUMPING UP AND DOWN with excitement. Blitzen was , so the others SCURRIED, CROUCHING DOWN behind snowdrifts or behind trees.  Suddenly, all the reindeer STOOD STILL.

They heard a bell jingle so they RACED back to the barn.  Santa's Helper lined the deer up for their flight exercises. While she counted, the deer STOOD ON THE TIPS OF THEIR HOOVES and STRETCHED to the top of their antlers.  They SPRANG into the air and FLOATED back. The deer JUMPED FORWARD as far as possible, then BACKWARDS.

They HOPPED ON ONE HOOF and THEN THE OTHER. The reindeer STOOD UP straight and BENDING AT THEIR MIDDLE, they TOUCHED THEIR HIND HOOVES TEN TIMES. The most important exercise was to practice GALLOPING IN PLACE to build up their leg muscles.

Last of all, the reindeer STOOD on their hind legs and SQUATTED FIVE TIMES.

The supper bell rang and the reindeer HERDED into their stalls for a special delight of peanut butter and cheese which they CHEWED slowly and carefully. Tired from all their training and fun, Santa's deer CURLED UP in the soft hay, CLOSED THEIR EYES, and went to sleep.

EIGHT LITTLE REINDEER

Eight little reindeer beside Santa's sleigh,
Getting hitched up to be on their way. (hold up eight fingers)
The first one said, We can't be late.
The second one said, Christmas won't wait.

The third one said, The sleigh's full of toys.

The fourth one said, For all the girls and boys.
The fifth one said, I'm ready to fly.
The sixth one said, Across the evening sky.
The seventh one said. Look, it's starting to snow.
The eighth one said, I think it's time to go.
Ready? said Santa. It's almost Christmas Day.
And off they all flew -- up, up, and away!

So we chopped it down with all our might (pretend to chop down tree)

Everyone though that it looked just great. (clasp hands and smile)
Then we all joined hands and circled round (form circle with others)

THE MESSAGE OF THE CANDY CANE

Jesus Gentle Shepherd, this cane of red and white proclaims the sweet love story born on Christmas night, This cane, you see when turned around begins your name of Love and now becomes a symbol of peace proclaimed above. The lively peppermint flavour is the regal gift of spice. The white is your purity and the red your sacrifice. And so this cane reminds of just how much you care and like your Christmas Gift to us it's meant for all to share.
