| In
Year 9 we students into like-ability groups. At the end of Year
8 we look at our teaching groups and decide which students would
benefit from small teaching groups with support to enable as many
as possible to achieve Level 5 in their KS3 SATs (average for their
age). All students then follow our Year 9 schemes of work at differing
levels. At this stage we have to concentrate more fully on work
towards the SATs a Shakespeare text, and reading with understanding.
We work very hard on improving written accuracy. We build on basic
skills taught in Years 7 and 8 and also work on sentence structure
and the spelling of irregular words in preparation for the KS3 SATs.
We continue to generate a love of reading. Students are rewarded
if they read aloud in class, complete a library book, or if they
read aloud at home. A reading list matching ability will be given
to students are the start of every school year.
Year 9 homeworks will follow the pattern below. All teachers will
follow a scheme of work which will match the academic ability of
their class. In Year 9 this will include the study of a novel, comprehension
practice, and the in-depth study of a Shakespeare text (Macbeth).
There will be a detailed homework list with each scheme of work.
This will be sent home and we would ask you to ensure that they
complete this week by week. We will contact you if any student fails
to do this, as our homeworks continue study within class.
After the SATs exams, students will completed their final piece
of GCSE coursework (on Macbeth). A number of homeworks will require
them to work on this essay. It is vital that this is completed on
time. The deadline for this piece is two weeks before the end of
the Summer term.
We are always aiming to achieve good KS3 SATs results which reflect
students’ abilities. We cannot do this if homeworks are not completed.
We feel we are working with parents at all times to ensure that
every one of our students is achieving the very best Speaking and
Listening, Reading and Writing levels within the English National
Curriculum.
