Religious Studies Full Course

Candidates are required to submit coursework of approximately 1,500 words. There will be lesson time set aside for coursework, although the majority of the work will be completed as homework.

Project title: Marriage coursework

Outline of work
Using handout provided, students should answer the following questions in detail:

    MARKS
A Describe the Christian marriage service and explain the importance of the different parts of the service and the promises made by the bride and groom.

B Why does the Christian Church disapprove of divorce? Explain how Matthew 19: 3-9 and Mark 10: 2-12 affect Christian views of divorce.

C “To allow a divorced person to remarry is a rejection of the Christian principles of marriage.”
Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer, showing you have thought different points of view Christians may hold.

Students should choose two of the following Jewish festivals:

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
Pesach
Purim
Sukkot

For each festival they should investigate and produce information on the following:

Origin and story
How it is celebrated today
Special food
Special objects
Why it is important to Jews today

This should be written up as a revision guide.

This should be written in the form of a project

  • Inca civilisations
  • Ancient Egyptians
  • Ancient Roman religion
  • Ancient Greek religion
  • Beliefs and stories about gods
  • Worship – temples, worship in the home
  • Festivals
  • Ceremonies of life e.g. birth, marriage, death etc
  • Special people – holy men, priests
  • Religious attitudes or beliefs about life

Project title: Buddhist Rites of Passage

Task:

Create an instruction booklet (A4 or A5) to inform the reader of the Rites of Passage that are observed by Buddhists around the world. You must include the following chapters within this booklet.

Outline of work:

  • An explanation of the term Rites of Passage
  • Birth ceremony – what happens and why?
  • Marriage ceremony – what happens and why?
  • Death and funeral service – what happens and why?
  • Buddhist view of life after death

Extra marks will be awarded if you:

  • Individually design the booklet
  • Include pictures and diagrams
  • Make your leaflet as ‘user friendly’ as possible

Project title: Buddhist Ethics

Task:

Create a project which focuses on Buddhist attitudes to a number of ethical issues. You are to choose three topics from the list below:

  • Prejudice and discrimination
  • The role and status of women
  • Wealth and poverty
  • Abortion
  • Euthanasia
  • Suicide
  • Environmental issues

Outline of work:

Research each of your topics thoroughly and for each include the following information:

  • An explanation of what the topic is and provide some background information to it
  • How Buddhists approach this ethical issue
  • Why they choose to take this approach
  • An evaluation of whether you agree or disagree with the approach generally taken by Buddhists and why

Project title: Jewish Ethics

Outline of Work:

Students should investigate the Jewish attitudes to: Euthanasia, Abortion, Capital Punishment.

In their investigation students should make sure that they state the origin of Jewish thinking on Ethics and how it has changed over the past 3,000 years. Any differences between Orthodox and Progressive Judaism should be mentioned. Finally, students should evaluation the Jewish views and say how valid they think they are.

This should be written up as a project on A4 paper.

Students should investigate a charitable organisation which deals with poverty e.g. Christian Aid, Unicef, Tear Fund, Salvation Army, Dr. Barnardo’s, Oxfam.

Students should examine Christian teaching about helping the poor.

The project should be presented as an information leaflet.
