Duke of Edinburgh Award : Bronze

1 February 2005

Dear Parent

Your son/daughter has now successfully passed all the requirements for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. In order to celebrate this achievement Mrs Bartlett will be presenting each student with their certificate during the Year 10 assembly on Friday, 11 February 2005.

There will also be the opportunity to join with bronze, silver and gold participants at Oxford Town Hall on Thursday, 10 March from 6.45pm to 8.30pm to receive their badges. I would like as many students as possible to attend along with parents. Invitations will be sent out later this month.

I am very encouraged that a number of bronze award holders are intending to register for silver. The cost of the new file and record book will be £10 – these are currently on order.

Students can continue working at the same physical activity and skill that they did for bronze as long as continued improvement and progression is in evidence. This means that the pressure is less than if a new activity and skill had to be pursued.

If there are any students looking to do something for service and have not already done the babysitting course, this is on offer again beginning the first Tuesday after February half-term at Adult Education. Please contact Adult Education for a registration form.

With regard to the silver award I have managed to secure a number of places on the expedition organised by Mr Trevor Langish, He will be holding a Planning Day on 2nd October at Kidlington followed by a two night and three day expedition in the Forest of Dean from 27 – 30 October (half-term week). I shall be attending both these events as an observer and not a leader. The cost will be £70 which covers everything apart from food and personal items. There will be transport to and from the Forest of Dean. A deposit of £25 will be required by 11 September.

Due to the pressure of GCSE’s it might be that individuals need more than one year to achieve this award. This is not a problem as participants realistically have until they are 25 to complete! I envisage that most of the young people could achieve the award in two years.

Should you need further clarification of any aspect of the Award please do contact me.

Thanking you for our continued support.

Yours sincerely

Lesley Brady
