DUKE of EDINBURGH’S AWARD BRONZE LEVEL ASSESSMENT EXPEDITION WEEKEND 18th / 19th Sept ‘04

Dear Parents

I am sure that you will be aware by now that your son/daughter and his/her group have opted for the above Assessment Expedition so I am now sending you some more details of this particular venture.

The Expedition takes place in the Filkins area on the Oxfordshire/Gloucestershire border. It is an area of villages and farms, crossed by the A361 Lechlade to Burford road so the group will never be very far from houses.

Participants will be walking as a group of between 4 & 7, for a period of up to 6 hours and over a minimum distance of 12-13 km each day, along routes that they have planned in advance. The walking rate of 3km per hour should give them plenty of time to write detailed logs of what they see en route and-during breaks in the journey- to pursue their particular “purpose”.

On the Saturday the groups will converge on their camp-site at Oxleaze Farm (grid ref 219053), marked on the accompanying map, from their chosen start points. We would be grateful if you could arrange for your son/daughter to be at their starting point, in good time for a 10.00am start. I will inform you at a later date what this start point will be, once the groups have selected their route.

On the Sunday, the walking groups will have planned a “circular” route from and to Oxleaze Farm. They can be collected from Oxleaze Farm at 4pm. Providing they are not late back, this should give the assessor adequate time to de-brief them before they depart for home.

As with the “Practice Weekend” participants will be required to take home with them an agreed share of their group’s tentage and cooking equipment to ensure that it cleaned, prior to checking and storage.

Throughout the weekend a qualified assessor will monitor each group’s progress. He/She will be looking after the group’s camp craft, how well they pitch and strike their tents and cook their food, as well as at how they have packed their rucksacks, how suitably they are clad and shod, how well they might cope in an emergency and how effectively they work together as a group.

The ‘phone number of Oxleaze Farm, for emergency use, is 01367-850216 and I will be staying at the farm overnight with other members of the assessment team.

I do hope this provides you with all the information you need but do not hesitate to contact me on 01869-241634, or 01869-243331, if there is anything else you would like to know.

I enclose a basic map of the expedition area, two Health Forms and two Consent Forms. Please complete all and return them to School ASAP along with a cheque for £20 (made payable to BCC). This charge is to cover the costs of camp fees, group equipment hire, meths, photocopying, postage and a share of the assessor’s and the party organiser’s mileage.

Thank you for your co-operation with our arrangements.

Yours sincerely

Mrs L P Brady
