Year 7 are split into two half year groups, A and B, depending on the tutor group. Side A is made up of students from Forms 7.1 to 7.5 and Side B from 7.6 to 7.9. The groups are organised into ability sets and are primarily designed to give the students the maximum challenge as well as support and guidance in mathematics. To start with the sets are dependent on the Teacher Assessments from primary schools. However, later on in the term, the sets are fully revised to reflect the extra information gained. In other words, Teacher Assessments from primary schools, the Key Stage 2 SATs results, CATs predictors and internal tests.
The work studied is taken from the framework for the National Mathematics Strategy KS3.
Homework is set once a week and students are expected to spend approximately forty minutes on each one. Sometimes students are given a separate homework book (blue exercise book) to complete their work in.
Students will be set either exercises from the text books or research on the topic being studied. Sometimes mathematical puzzles (problem solving) or a learning homework are set, these are usually over and above the weekly task.
In addition to the above it is very important that students practise mental arithmetic on a regular basis. Multiplication tables must be learnt thoroughly.
The homework pattern for each class is listed below. Please note that while topic order will remain the same throughout the course, some timings may change slightly depending on progress made in a particular topic.
Text books available will vary depending on the set, and students will not be issued with a particular one at the start.
Books available include:
Set 1 Essential Mathematics 1; Key Maths E; Vickers Maths levels 5 and 6
Set 2 Key Maths 7.2; Key Maths E, Vickers levels 4 and 5
Set 3 Key Maths 7.2; Key Maths 7.1, Vickers levels 4 and 5
Sets 4 Key Maths 7.2 & 7.1; Vickers level 4; Key Maths Resource; SMP Interact
The schedules are set out as follows:
All Sets follow the basic core in the Key Stage 3 Mathematics Strategy. However, the higher sets will include extension tasks and the lower sets will be doing some recap work.
