At
the beginning of Year 7 students follow a common English curriculum.
They are taught within ability groups.
During the first half term we also analyse knowledge about language.
We pay particular attention to sentence structure, paragraphs, capital
letters, full stops, commas, question and exclamation marks. Alongside
this, students will be working on a ‘transition’ unit
based on work in their previous school.
One of our major aims is to ensure a love of reading. Students are
rewarded if they read aloud in class, complete a library book, of
if they read aloud at home. We do encourage your comments in the homework
diaries. A reading list matching ability will be given to students
at the start of every school year.
An example of homeworks accompanying a unit is given below. All English
teachers will follow a scheme of work which will match the academic
ability of their class. There will be a detailed homework list with
each scheme of work. This will be sent home and we would ask you to
ensure that they complete this week by week. We will contact you if
any student fails to do this, as our homeworks continue study within
class.
Homeworks will include reading and filling in their reading logs,
learning spellings, and longer pieces of writing, for example, diaries
and an autobiography
