Our Values
It is a privilege to work with young people during their formative years.
Our attitudes towards them are inescapably shaped by our values. For
the staff of Bicester Community College these can be summarised as follows:
• We believe that schools matter, that the provision of a well-ordered
learning environment is a common right for all our children.
• We believe that schools matter more and more as 'the family
unit' is less constant for so many children. Schools constantly need
to redefine, refine and articulate social and moral values, and respect
for others irrespective of their class, sex, race, religion or heritage
tongue. Further, schools must help young people to develop a set of
values and standards on which to base their own social and moral judgements.
• We believe that schools must promote the highest achievement
in youngsters, irrespective of their abilities or aspirations. Children
are naturally and healthily competitive. In the words of John Holt "they
are interested in knowing who does things best, and they are all deeply
interested in doing whatever they do today a little better than they
did it yesterday."
• We celebrate - in a climate of equal opportunity and access
to that opportunity - a broad range of achievements. We value and reward
students' oral, practical, academic, sporting, artistic and leadership
skills.
• We hold to a commitment to local community comprehensive education
and to a philosophy of 'cradle to grave' learning.
• We believe in the value of marketing state education, in a spirit
of partnership with neighbouring primary, secondary and special schools
in the Bicester district.
Our
Aims
We declare ourselves to be:
• a learning school : that is a place where the
quality of classroom learning and student achievement are in constant
focus. There are high expectations of students within a well-ordered
and purposeful learning environment.
• a family school : all teaching and support
staff believe that central to the education of every child is the partnership
that exists between the school and the family. Regular meetings with
parents to review progress are thus an important feature of school life.
• a community school : Bicester has a long tradition
of involvement with the local community. At a time when the town is
growing rapidly it is increasingly important that the College Campus
is seen as an educational and recreational resource to be used not only
by students but by local people generally.

providing learning opportunities for all the family both at school and
at home through email, extranet links and on-line technology.

and with the wider community, exploiting technology to further our links
with Higher and Further Education Colleges, and to provide new opportunities
for The Cooper School and our Adult Education Centre.
We will use our links with local firms and sponsors to ensure that vocational
courses meet local need and that students’ experience of learning
fits them to work in an increasingly technological and scientific age.
We will develop the Key Skills required by local businesses and industry

training and skills-based learning for all who live and work here.
