Ladies
Centenary Open - June 2005
Skelmorlie
Golf Club Ladies Section celebrated their Centenary on the 4th June
2005 with a Centenary Open Greensome competition which was a great
success despite the very wet and misty conditions in the early part
of the day.
The competition was sponsored by Vice Captain Mrs Anne Murphy, Gourock
Post Office and to mark the Centenary a new Crystal Trophy was presented
to the ladies by sponsor Brian Spence of J B Spence, Wemyss Bay
Pharmacy. A history of the Ladies section, prepared by member Mrs
Jenny McGee, and a commemorative key ring were presented to all
the competitors as a keepsake of the occasion.
Lady Captain Elspeth Howie thanked all the competitors, sponsors
and helpers for their efforts in making the day so special.
72 competitors participated and some very good scores were returned
despite the conditions. The inagural winners of the Competition
and the Trophy were Mrs A Donaldson many times Champion at Skelmorlie
and Mrs M Paton a relatively new player.

Ladies
Championship 2004
The Ladies Championship,
the Fleming Quaich was won for the third time by Kath Mackellar
after a splendid round of controlled golf, in what can only be described
as gale-force conditions. Both she and her fellow finalist, last
year's champion Aileen Donaldson, played golf of the highest quality,
and scoring in the outward nine was very close indeed with Aileen
winning at the ninth hole to bring the match back to all square.
At the tricky tenth, Kath produced yet another perfectly straight,
long drive plus a well judged nine iron to reach the green, and
her two putts for par enabled her to go 1-up once again. The easterly
wind at this point was making it difficult to stand still and both
ladies had a real battle to half this par 3 in 5. During this Aileen's
heavy electric trolley took off down a gulley in dramatic fashion,
shedding its battery on the way to indicate just how strong the
wind was! Both tee shots at the twelfth went right into the heavy
rough and Kath's provisional ball then went into the left rough.
Aileen's ball was found but was unplayable and Kath could only hack
her ball a shortway up the fairway. Aileen eventually reached the
green in 4 while Kath needed to chip in from about 20 yards for
a 7! She did exactly that for the shot of the day and came off with
half as Aileen struggled on the green to 3 putt. Kath then won the
13th and 14th holes to go 3 up but yet again Aileen fought back
on the 15th with a well crafted par 5. to win one back. On the short
16th with the wind behind, both tee shots went through the green
but Kath once more produced a beautifully executed chip to leave
a shortish putt for par. This she sank to win the match and her
third championship. Congratulations to Kath but all credit to both
ladies for producing such exciting golf under extreme conditons.
A thrilling climax to one of the best championships for years.
