THE
ASSOCIATED CLUBS OF CLYDE GOLF COMPETITION
"FIRTH OF CLYDE TROPHY " (THE BIG TROPHY)

The Associated Clubs
of Clyde held their annual "Firth of Clyde Trophy"
competition hosted by Blairmore and Strone Golf Club. The host club
was generous with their hospitality and welcome, which was much
appreciated by all.
This competition is competed
by the member clubs in the communities on the River
Clyde which have a pier.
Starting at Gourock these
include Skelmorlie, Largs, Routenburn, Cowal,
Innellan, Blairmore and Strone, Millport, Rothesay, Port Bannatyne
and Kyles
of Bute golf clubs.
The Firth of Clyde Trophy
has been going since 1898 and is reputed to be the
oldest inter community/club competition in the world, this has never
been refuted.
Sam Torrance and Ben
Crenshaw, the UK and USA Past Captains of the Ryder Cup are the
patrons.
It requires 5 man teams
( low handicaps) playing in 3 ball matches with
the best 3 scores counting to each teams total. There is a prize
for the Best Individual Scratch Score, the W.E.Turner Memorial Trophy,
which was won this year with a 64
by Steven Renfrew of Port Bannatyne .
This year Skelmorlie
were the winners with 207, having last won in 1988,
Gourock were second with 210 having the better 4th score and Innellan
third
with 210. Routenburn 210, Blairmore and Strone 211, Millport 218
and Port
Bannatyne 222.
The Skelmorlie team are
Paul Mangan, Ross McGinn, Team Captain Johnny
Brydon, and Hugh Logue.
The Associated Clubs
of Clyde next competition is in August at Blairmore and Strone
for the "Wee Trophy" (higher handicap players)
