Stylz Jive Club

Tango, Blues & Drops Workshop Sunday 30th November,

See 'What's On Guide'

We dance every Tuesday and Thursday at the Community Centre on Park Lane, Poynton. The community centre is an excellent venue for dancing and is regularly used for Hoe Downs and Line Dancing. There is a superb sprung dance floor with room for about 80 to 90 people. This has a fabulous sound system and amazing lighting that give a great atmosphere. There is also a second smaller hall with room for about 30 to 40 people. This also has its own sound system and lighting. The venue has a fully-licensed bar and ample free parking.

Stylz Jive is a friendly and sociable place. We don't just want our members to learn to dance, but to have a great evening out and make new friends. At Stylz we consider it important to encourage those who are new to this style of dancing. We therefore have a special 'beginners only' session in a side hall so that those who have been dancing less that 6 weeks can go over the routine they learnt earlier in the evening while more experienced dancers have a go at an intermediate class in the main hall.

The club was set up by Roy & Rosemary Greenhalgh.  Roy is responsible for all the teaching and workshops whilst Rosemary manages the door.

What is Modern Jive?

Modern Jive was initially called French Jive, and as the name suggests came across from France. It developed from the Jitterbug, a dance brought over from America during the second world war. In this country during the 60's dancing on your own became popular with every body doing the twist. This was later followed by disco dancing, a dance performed by ladies around a group of handbags. In France however partner dancing remained popular. The style of dance became more relaxed with less emphasis on footwork and Modern Jive was born. Of all the dance styles, Modern Jive is by far the most useful because you can use it at so many social occasions - even on the smallest of dance floors. It's probably the most widely taught style of dance in the world, with classes throughout the UK, much of Europe, Australia and the USA. It is a useful dance to learn as it is easy to pick up and it can be danced to almost any sort of music from 1940s swing to the latest chart hits. Modern Jive is also taught by a number of franchises in the UK with names like Ceroc, LeRoc, Blitz etc. But it's all Modern Jive.

It's also a really fun way to keep fit and a great social night out. There are about 24 beginners' moves and many, many more intermediate and advanced ones - so you can just keep learning new moves every week!
