French Connection
My cousin Colin is contemplating the purchase of a property in France and found he was corresponding with Antoinette Coombes. Below is a copy of the letter he received from her husband.
I thought our name was derived from Cwm welsh for a small valley.
Also I wonder if there is any connection with the wine and the name on the Eiffel Tower see Interesting Sightings

Dear Mr. Antrobus, Very strange that your mother's family were Coombes. My father's family
comes from Silverton, nr. Exeter where the name was very common, also at
Bradnich nr. Exeter. I have some research which shows that ?? De Cumbe comes
from Brittany after William the Conqueror and settled as farmers
around Exeter having sailed up the Exe river and the name derived from
that over the centuries. Sincerely Peter Coombes |

I received an e-mail from my cousin Elsie McMullen yesterday. She had a look at this page and she says "It does make me think back how dad (Frederick Coombs 1896-1963) always said we had a French blood ties, we all laughed about it. Should have asked more questions. It is all very interesting".
