DEDICATION
TO
BETTY AMELIA OAKES
1928-1999

These pages are dedicated to my cousin Betty Amelia Oakes. Without her inspiration they would not exist.

In a chance conversation with her neighbour Mike Wilkinson whilst seeing in the New Year 1991, she discovered he used to visit a friend's house in Blackheath in which she lived after the war. When names were checked with his brother Derek she realised his friends were her cousins, me and my brother Chris. Betty rang Chris the next day. Chris checked with Will our half brother, Will telephoned Betty. What an exciting time.

Betty organised a family gathering at her house that year and they have continued at different locations ever since. At that first gathering she gave me a copy of our family tree that was put together by Ken Liscombe who lives in Burlington, Ontario. I thought my dad had just two brothers, discovering he was one of seven children was quite a shock.

I noticed some obvious mistakes on the tree and from that moment I was hooked.
