RURAL RIDES

A selection of Weekend and Other Tours

through Southern and Eastern England

The rides in this section were ridden over the past few years by the Kingfield Arms Cycling Club. This worthy band, consisting of myself, Keith, and Bob, all of us then in our later forties and more resembling The Last of the Summer Wine* than a serious cycling club, came up with the ideas for the rides over a pint or two in the establishment from which the club took its name. It fell to yours truly to work out the details of the routes, with the aim of keeping off main roads unless it was really impossible to avoid them.

At the time we did these rides, Keith was still a reasonably dedicated cyclist, I was building up to do longer rides, and Bob was a raw beginner. The bikes that each of us rode reflected that status. So there is no reason why anyone should not be able to enjoy one of these rides.

Most of the rides were intended as two-day weekend rides. Keith works on Saturdays, so a two-day trip at bank holiday weekends was all he could manage. Several of them start from Woking, in Surrey, because that's where we live. Actually, Woking's not a bad place to start a ride, given that you have to start somewhere. It's on the edge of the suburban sprawl, so you're into countryside almost immediately, but it's only 25 minutes from London Waterloo, and outside the peak hour there's no problem taking a bike on the trains.

*For those who are not from the UK, The Last of the Summer Wine is a very long-running British TV comedy series about the life and adventures of three Yorkshire pensioners.
