Land’s End to John O’Groats
and other Cycle Tours

Hints, tips, and frequently-asked questions
for long distance cycling

On the following pages I've set out a whole range of hints and tips and the answers to questions which have frequently been posed by those who are thinking of setting out on an End to End trip. Of course, many of them are just as relevant to any kind of cycling tour. I hope they'll answer the sort of typical questions that follow on from the words “I'm thinking of cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats…”.

I've gathered the answers from a whole range of sources, not least my own experiences. Not everyone will agree with the things I've suggested, and that's fine by me, because there's no right and no wrong way of doing the End to End. That's part of the fun of it, discovering what works and what doesn't, and sometimes proving to yourself that the things you thought you couldn't do turn out to be not so impossible after all.

If you feel I'm teaching you to suck eggs, then sorry but I'm not sorry. Sometimes the obvious needs to be said, and not only for beginners – even after a lot of tours, I have still been known to set off on a trip without water bottles or a puncture repair outfit, and I bet I'm not the only one.

On the other hand, if you think there's anything useful I've left out, or I've got completely wrong, or you just want a chat, please get in touch. There's an email link on the Useful Links page.
