This volume consists of a decorative title page stating that there are
'Eight Bookes' printed by William Stansbye to be sold by George Lathum ( no
date), an introduction headed 'To the Reader' (5 pages), the preface, a
page headed 'What things are handled in the Bookes following' (covering
eight books) , and then the first, second, third and fourth books. The pages
from the beginning of the preface to the end of the fourth book have been
numbered and run to no. 207. None of the first four books is
dated. There is then the fifth book which consists
of a decorative title page dated 1632, a dedication of nine pages, and then
text which starts at a page numbered 181and running to page
453.
There then follows 'Certayne Divine Tractates and other Godly Sermons'
which consists of a decorative title page dated 1632, a page headed 'To the
Reader', a page listing contents , and then seven sections. The
second, fourth and seventh sections are preceded by decorative title pages
dated 1631.This part starts at a (different) page 453 and goes to page
550.
There are then 'Two Sermons Upon Part of S.Judes' which are preceded by a
decorative title page dated 1631 and dedication from 'Corp.Christ Colledge'
to Mr George Summaster. These pages are numbered from 553 to
583. Finally there
are two alphabetical tables containing the matters in respectively the first
four and then the fifth
book.
The internal condition is generally very good subject to moderate water
staining affecting the lower corners to varying degrees throughout.
Otherwise the title page is a little worn with a small chip to its top
outside corner and a 4 cm slit (virtually no loss) close to the inside
border. The binding is very firm having evidently been repaired; the end
papers are relatively recent. The paste down on the inside of the covers has
not been done with care; on the front there is an owners label ( perhaps
19th century) with the name neatly scored out and unobtrusive evidence of a
couple of other small labels having at some stage been present. The cover is
clearly early (other than the label on the spine) and for its age is in
good/very good condition with relatively little wear although there is some
cracking to the surface of the leather. |

In full: The History of England; Written in French by M. [meaning Monsieur
- the man's name is Paul] Rapin de Thoyras: Translated into English with
additional notes and continued from the revolution to the accession of King
George II by N. Tindal, M.A. Late rector of Alverstoke in Hampshire, and
Chaplain to the Royal Hospital at Greenwich: With an explanatory account of
the medals, illuftrative of the moft remarkable events. Brought down to the
present period by the moft approved historians: with an index to each
volume, and a general index to the whole work, in the last volume.
Embellifhed with portraits of the Kings, Queens, and other diftinguifhed
characters; alfo elegant engravings of naval and military Engagements,
Plans, Charts, Monuments, Coins, Great Seals, &c Volume 1 [1785] 600+pp
[3.9Kg] Ancient Briton Edward IV Volume 2 [1786] 1100+pp [6.0Kg] Edward V
to James II Volume 3 [1790] 700+pp [4.4Kg] William & Mary Anne However,
Volume 4, covering George the I. II and III [despite the title above] is not
included. The books are in pretty good condition. There is a hint of
browning and foxing, but the text seems to be complete with no pages even
loose. Sad to say, most of the illustrations have been removed, presumably
by one of the vandals that sell prints! The covers show signs of age in that
the leather is worn and, in places, torn: the tops and bottoms of the spines
are slightly damaged, but they are all still well attached. I admit I
bought these books as a business proposition only, but they really are
readable for pleasure. And in sufficiently good condition that it's easily
possible to do so. Let me give an example from p396 of vol2: 'Whilst every
thing seemed to procure king James a quiet and peacable reign, the devil,
envying the happiness of the English, inspired some of his agents with one
of the most horrible plots that was ever heard of. I mean the gun-powder
treason plot, which has made so much noise in the world, and of which I
shall relate the particulars, without any aggravation.' Lovely stuff,
followed by several more pages about the plot and it's results. A very fair
price for these three volumes, if they still had the plates would be £1500,
€2500 or $2500. I am offering them for about 80% off, with postage at cost. |
