Support: Dave and Gray
Two voices, two guitars, one song at a time... It's a simple formula, yet somehow they manage to make it sound as if it's actually quite difficult.

For the past 3 years Dave Phillips and Gray Hawke have made sporadic appearances individually and together over a wide tract of southern and central England, leaving an unfathomable impression on those too slow to leave before the music started. Folk clubs need people like this - people who had the good sense to give it all up 25 years ago and the bottle to start all over again even though their looks have gone.

Traditional and contemporary; melody and harmony, passion and rhythm - it's all there. If only they could remember where they put it

April 10th, Open Stage

April 17th, Izzy & David Emeney with Kate Riaz £6

Issy & David Emeney with Kate Riaz Originally from Suffolk, Issy and David now live in Somerset at the foot of the Mendip Hills in Cheddar.

Much of their material is original, but their songs and tunes are distinctly traditional in style. Accompanying themselves on melodeon, guitar and bouzouki, with fine harmonies, strong arrangements and some great choruses, their audience is with them from the word go.

The duo have recently been joined by brilliant cellist Kate Riaz. Her inspired playing has proved the perfect third dimension to an already successful duo. Pete Coe describes them as "a talented trio with fine songs and tunes, well sung, good harmonies and excellent accompaniments".

Issy is an outstanding melodeon player. Inspired to take up the box by the playing of Norfolk squeezer Tony Hall, she has developed an unusually sensitive and creative style "a delight to play with" John Dipper.
Issy, David and Kate have a new album out on the Wild Goose label, Legends & Lovers.

July 10th, Tom Bliss

Tom Bliss Tom has been compared as a writer with Steve Knightly, Steve Tilston, Jez Lowe, and even Bruce Springsteen(!) with many songs already being mistakenly credited as Trad Arr. His sympathy and enthusiasm for ancient musical forms and language, and his understanding of the craft of songwriting, from show tunes to hymns to pop, coupled with dilligent research and attention to detail, has made him one of the handful of performers on the folk circuit today whose work is admired by modernist and traditionalist alike.

Over the past six years he's built a solid reputation as a pro performer first with Slide, then with duo partner Tom Napper, playing folk clubs, theatres, arts centres, village halls and festivals - increasingly as a headline act - throughout the UK. While still touring both with Tom and with their quartet The Pipers Sons, Tom Bliss is now developing his career as a solo artist. This is because some of his finest songs (and traditional interpretations) work most powerfully with just one voice, (with or without an accomanying instrument). And the freedom to develop phrasing and dynamics within the mood of the material often permits a more intense, intimate delivery then can be achieved even with musicians as sympathetic as TN, TT and CP. Tom's also written many excellent songs that have never made it into the duo or quartet sets for one reason or another, and working alone lets him present new material as soon as it's ready - so solo gig audiences are often the first to hear a new 'classic.'

October 2nd, Ron Trueman-Border £7

Ron Trueman-Border Ron has gained an enviable reputation as one of the folk and acoustic scene's most popular singer/songwriters.

Perhaps it is because he writes such accessible choruses, so enthusiastically received by his audiences, that everyone feels an empathy with the lyrics. Many musicians, having heard his songs, are covering them and have progressed to recording them too.

It has been said by many, that Ron is a gifted writer, but he is also an extremely talented guitarist multi-instrumentalist and accomplished singer able to convey a sense of fun one minute and sheer emotion the next.
