Club Competitions
This page provides a brief explanation of the competitions run by Dip Your Toe In Bridge Club , and how and where their results are shown on the web site.
Eligibility for Club Competitions
Whilst visitors are welcome at club events, their results do not appear on the web pages showing the results of the various competitions. Also when members play with visitors or with members of the management acting as a stand-by partner, the score that is entered in the competition results is the lower of the player's average in the previous period or their actual score on the night. Results played with visitors that may have been adjusted are shown in black as opposed to the normal colour for that type of competition.
The Club Year.
The DYTI calendar runs from January to December. Member subscriptions are due on January 1st. If the subscription is paid after Feb 28th, the player will be treated as a new member as regards participation in club competitions.
Club Handicapping.
DYTI Bridge Club calculates a handicap for each player. In the Handicap competitions the club's objective is that all players have an equal chance of winning.
The handicap system works similarly to a golf handicap. The Scratch score for DYTI competitions is 62%, that is to say, if your average in the previous period was 62 % or higher you will receive no help from the handicapping system. If you average 50% in the previous championship period, you are awarded a handicap of 12 If you average 38% or lower, you will achieve the maximum handicap of 24.
The score included in Handicapped competition results is the sum of the actual score and the handicap value.
Handicaps are set for the current quarter in the first week of the period. Players must submit 4 results in the previous quarter to achieve a new handicap; otherwise the old handicap is carried forward. New or rejoining members are given a handicap of 12 for the current period. The club management reserves the right to award higher initial handicaps to new members having very high Master Point ratings.
Details of the Competitions.
1. The Quarterly Championship.
A club championship competition is held in each quarter of the year. The competition results are based on the total of the best 6 scores submitted by each player in the relevant period. There is a web page for the quarterly Championship which shows all results in the period and lists all players in order of the total of their best 6 results.
The Championship web page also shows the running totals of the new handicap which will be applied to results in the following quarter.
The results of all four quarterly championships remain visible in the Current Year section of the web site. All the results of the previous year are also there.
2.The Monthly Handicap Competition.
The weekly results are also entered into a Monthly Handicap competition. The winner each month is established by taking the aggregate of the best three handicapped scores in the month achieved by each player. A handicapped score is arrived at by adding the handicap to the score appearing in the results.
The winner of a Handicap Competition has his handicap reduced by 2 points for the rest of the quarter. The second placed player's handicap is reduced by 1. Thus, if you win the first two Monthly Handicap competitions, in the third month, your handicap will be adjusted downwards by 4 points. In the next quarter each player then has a new handicap which cancels out the adjustments made in the previous quarter.
There is a separate web page for the monthly Handicap competition and the results for each period remain visible on the club's web site for the current and previous year.
3. Quarterly League Competition
The clubs' members are placed in one of four divisions, each comprising 16 players, except the fourth division which contains all the members not allocated to the first 3. New comers start in division 4. In each quarter there are 4 promotions/demotions between divisions.
The results of the League are based on the unhandicapped best eight results in the period. (7 in the last quarter which is shorter due to Xmas.)
Players in the Premier Division may be awarded bonus points each week according to the quality of the Convention Card they present. The bonus points are added to the score recorded in the League results. The bonus points do not affect the published results for the event, the MasterPoint figures or the other competitions.
There is a separate web page for the quarterly League competition and the results for each period remain visible on the club's web site for the current and previous year.
