W. E. Turton, 1910-1911 entire club postcard Between 1910 and 1930 the club went to Turton of Birkby, Huddersfield, for all of their studio and team group photography. A wonderful example of a postcard of the 1910-11 Town squad for their first ever season in the Football League. The players look fantastic decked out in their 'Sunday best'! (Top) Rowley (Asst. trainer), Taylor, Mutch, Bullock, Duxbury, Carter (Trainer) (Second row) Beaton, E. Hall, Fayers, Bartlett (Third row) Blackburn, Howie, Hamilton, Richardson, Macauley, Jee (Bottom) H. Hall, Hughes, Wood, McGubbin, Metcalfe. (Photo courtesy Darren Herbert) |

Anonymous 1914-1915 (1913-14?) team group postcard What a rarity this is! No producer's name on the back, just the usual words POST CARD, 'This space may be used for correspondence' and 'The address only to be written here', and a list of player names written in pencil. But strangest of all is why the team of 1914-15 should be wearing the kit of 1910-1913? By the 1913-14 season Town were wearing the famous blue and white stripes, but here they are seen in the old white shirts with blue collars and shoulders. Yet this definitely is a 1914 squad; Charlie Slade joined Town from Aston Villa in March 1914, and Larrett Roebuck was called up in August of 1914 (and killed in action in October) so this photograph had to be taken between March and August of that year. Odd ... For the record, the names are (Back l-r) Tommy Elliott, Arthur Fairclough (manager), William McLaren, Fred 'Tiny' Fayers, Sandy Mutch, Larrett Roebuck and Fred Bullock. (Front l-r) Andy Armour, Simon Beaton, Charlie Slade, Frank Mann, Ernie Islip, Harry Linley and Joe Jee. Alan Hodgson, co-author of '99 Years & Counting', suggests the following ...
"I compared your picture with team photos of the same era, and I
reckon whoever wrote the names on the back had them in the right
order. Tommy Elliott and Fred Bullock were obviously not playing
that day. That
leaves us with 11 players in kit, and the only two games that all 11
were on duty together were on 11th April 1914 at Bradford Park
Avenue (lost 1-2, McLaren scored a penalty) and two days later at
Wolves (drew 2-2, Islip and Armour scoring). Going on the
background I'd tip Park Avenue; can't see them changing kit to avoid
a colour clash though (Avenue played in green & white hoops, Wolves
in old gold & black) , so maybe they were saving their first strip
for the Wolves match - who knows? On the other hand, the photo could
have been taken at Wolves with their first strip still in the wash
after the Bradford game!! And whoever wrote the date on the front
should have written 1913-14, not 1914-15."

W. E. Turton, 1919-1920 squad postcard A very rare item as this one isn't a team photograph as such, more a compilation of many Turton portraits. (Back) Rodgerson, Davis, Mutch, Bullock, Wood. (Middle) Brough, Mann, Wilson, J. Baker, Linley, Watson. (Front) Slade, Swann, Elliott, Taylor, Smith, Shields, Richardson. |

W. E. Turton, 1921-1922 squad postcard Postcards such as this are very difficult to find, and are usually very expensive, but because of minor damage to this one, I picked it up relatively cheaply. This postcard was obviously produced right at the start of the season, as by April of 1922 the team had won the FA Cup and would have had the trophy displayed on the postcard if it had been at the end of the season. (Back) Chapman, Wood, McKay, Slade, Mutch, Wilson T., Watson, Wadsworth, Chaplin. (Front) Richardson, Mann, Brown, Islip, Johnston, Stephenson, Smith. |

W. E. Turton, 1921-1922 team postcard Same season as the previous postcard, but this one has been taken at the tail end of it, featuring the team that won the Cup against Preston North End. The club is showing off the FA Cup, the West Riding Cup, and the Charity Shield which was competed for at the end of the season in those days; Town beat League Champions Liverpool 1-0 in May 1922 to clinch the Shield for the one and only time. Players only, (Middle) Wood, Slade, Mutch, Wilson, Watson and Wadsworth. (Front) Richardson, Mann, Islip, Stephenson and Smith.

W. E. Turton, 1927-1928 team group postcard Another rare Turton card, again with minor damage to the top right corner. This one features the amazing Alex Jackson (back row, far left) and is from the season when Town were the reigning Triple Champions, This season they were to finish as runners-up to Everton by a mere 2 points! (Back) Jackson, Redfern, Goodall, Mercer, Wilson, Kelly, Wadsworth. (Front) Brown, Stephenson, Smith, Barkas, Meads. (Inset) Steele. |

W. E. Turton, 1937-1938 entire club postcard Turton again and in poor condition, but I've 'patched' it up so that it looks fine. This is the pre-season full squad photograph, rather than the match-day one below from later in the season. (Back) Binns (Groundsman), Wilson (Asst. trainer), Lindsay, Robinson, (Director), Hesford, Parker (Director), Lancaster, Dodson (Asst. groundsman). (Second row) Foster (Asst. manager), Bates, Wood, Gordon, Johnson, Boot, Isaac, Horton, Wienand, Smith, Stephenson (Manager). (Third row) Chaplin (Trainer), Bailey, Craig, McFadyen, Lythgoe, Young, Hastie, Perrett, Richardson, Beasley, Beever (Secretary). (Front) Mountford, Watson, Smith R., Hayes, Barclay, Willingham, Chivers, Malpass, Sherwood (This photograph appears on page 161 of '75 Years On: A History of Huddersfield Town') |

Swedish postcard, 1937-38 team photograph Ensamratt, A.-B. Alga, Stockholm. This is a postcard, written in Swedish (!), and posted on 24th June 1938. I'm guessing that it perhaps dates from a game played on tour. But I could be wrong ... (Back) Brown, Chivers, Hesford, Johnson, Craig, Boot. (Front) Willingham, Hayes, Lythgoe, Hastie, Barclay and Beasley. |

1950-51 team group official press photograph I think that this is a trimmed-down press photograph. (Back) Goodall (trainer), Boot, Stewart, Battye, Mills, Gallogly, Hepplewhite, Nightingale, Stephenson (Manager). (Front) McKenna, Smith, Taylor, Hassall and Metcalfe. |

Huddersfield Examiner, 1967-68 squad official press photograph Paper stuck to the back dates the photograph as 18th August 1967, and notes that the image of John Oldfield was actually used in the newspaper on 15th February and 19th March of 1969. (Back) Shaw, Clark, Oldfield, Cromack, Ellam and Cattlin. (Middle) Meagan, Hill, Cherry, Nicholson, Dobson and Hellawell. (Front) McHale, Harper, Legg, Leighton and Parkin. NB Goalkeeper David C. Cromack is like many on the Turton page - on the books, but never played at first team level. He played once in Town Reserves, early in season 1967-68. Born in Leeds. on 22/12/1948, he started with Hull City as an amateur, and joined Doncaster Rovers in November 1966 where he made 8 appearances in 1966-67. He joined Town in July 1967 making 0 appearances, but I have no idea where he went from there. |

Press Association Photos, 1975-76 squad official press photograph There is some confusion here as both this and the following photograph purport to show the squad for the same season. This photograph has a Press Association note stuck to the back which declares ... "HUDDERSFIELD TOWN AFC FOR 1975/76 August 19th 1975 PAP 172399-(Ba-S) Huddersfield, Tuesday, PA: Lined up at Leeds Road, Huddersfield, ready for the 1975/76 season are Huddersfield Town AFC, who were relegated to the Fourth Division last season." (Back) Hart, Taylor, Dolan, Saunders, Poole, Baines. (Middle) Collins (manager), Endean, Lawson, Hutt, McGifford, Garner, Garwood, Edwards (physio). (Front) Fowler, Belfitt, Maitland, Campbell, Smith, Gray, O'Neil.

Huddersfield Examiner, 1975-76 squad official press photograph (Back) Hart, Dolan, Saunders, Taylor, Poole, Campbell, Baines. (Middle) Endean, Hutt, O'Neil, Belfitt, Smith, Garwood, Fowler. (Front) Maitland, Gray, Lawson, Garner, McGifford. So ... TWO photographs for the same season, in different kits! I think that the above one was taken mid-August and someone decided to change the kit at the last minute, meaning that the one at the right was used for the season. (This photograph appears on page 287 of the George Binns book '75 Years On: A History of Huddersfield Town') |

Huddersfield Examiner, 1989-90 squad official press photograph (Back) Mulhall (trainer), Shelton, Trevitt, O'Doherty, Cecere, Hardwick, Onuora, Leake, Mitchell, Duggan, Byrne, May, Bray, Williams (physio). (Front) Marsden, Maskell, O'Regan, Hutchings, Hand (manager), Withe (assistant manager), Smith, Bent, Wilson, Lewis. It's also worth noting how hard-up the club must have been; Dick Shelton, Iffy Onuora and Ian Bray are all wearing old style shirts with the white chest and very thin stripes! |
