Photographed by Leslie Overend, Idle, Bradford (1926)

Alexander S. Jackson

The only details on this back of this photograph are the those of the photographer above, together with the handwritten notes "Alex Jackson, Huddersfield Town, 1926".

What is there to say that hasn't already been said about the great Alec Skinner Jackson, wing-wizard and terror of the English? Jackson joined Town from Aberdeen in May 1925 having already enjoyed spells in Scotland and America (where he played alongside his brother, Walter). Herbert Chapman it was who brought him to Town, not long before departing for Highbury. Jackson enjoyed a magical Town career spanning five years, during which time he made 203 appearances, scoring 89 goals. He was part of the most-feared forward line of the time, and whilst a Town player he scored a headed hat-trick against England as a 'Wembley  Wizard' in 1928. In 1930 he moved on to Chelsea, then later to France and non-League English football before meeting an untimely death in a motoring accident whilst serving with the army in Egypt in 1946.

D.C. Thomson & Co. Ltd. Archive photograph (1927)

Hugh Turner

This photograph comes from the D.C. Thomson Archive and was used as a master from which they produced cards and magazine images. Pencil writing on the back points out that the game is Blackburn Rovers vs. Town,  and the Historical Kits website identifies the socks as season 1927-28, so everything points to the 1-1 draw on the 8th October, 1927. Hughie Turner is the goalkeeper claiming possession.

Hugh Turner was a popular Town goalkeeper between 1926 and 1937. Born in Wigan in 1904, he joined Town from Gateshead High Fell in April of 1926 and played 394 times before he joined Fulham in June of 1937. He also kept goal for England on two occasions during his spell at Town, against France (14th May 1931) and Belgium (16th May, 1931)

Daily Herald official press photograph (c1935)

J. N. Lancaster

A photograph of a mysterious Town goalkeeper who never made a first team appearance for the club. I have searched all the record books and cannot find any information about when and where he signed from or when and where he went, although he is one of the players featured in the Swindlehurst & Nicholson set on the 1935 page which suggests that he joined the club in August 1935 from Great Harwood.

John Ward - a Town historian - suggests the following information ...

"Lancaster made his debut for Town Reserves on 23rd January, 1937 - Town Reserves 8 Bolton Wanderers Res 2. Then on the 30th January, 1937 - Town Res 1 Wolves Res 0. I think they were his only 2 reserves appearances. He must have been released that season; nothing is known of him during / after WWII."

Incidentally - that's Alf Lythgoe looking on, having taken the shot.

Daily Herald official press photograph (1935-1937)

J. N. Lancaster

And another, again undated; might even be from the same training session, although I think this is unlikely.

George Roughton

The reverse reads,

"Daily Herald, 2 Chester Street, Oxford Road, Manchester. Copyright Photo"

William George Roughton was a left-back born in Manchester in 1909. He joined Town from Droylsden in October 1928, and moved to Manchester Utd. in September 1936. In between times, he represented the Town First XI on 171 occasions.

Daily Herald official press photograph (c1936)

Reg Mountford

The reverse reads,

"Daily Herald, 2 Chester Street, Oxford Road, Manchester. Copyright Photo"

Reginald C. Mountford played full-back for Town 255 times between 1929 and 1939, having signed from his home-town club of Darlington in May 1929. By the time that he moved to Combinaag of Copenhagen as a coach, in May of 1946, he had scored seven goals for Town.

Daily Herald official press photograph (c1936)

Alf Lythgoe

The reverse reads,

"Daily Herald, 2 Chester Street, Oxford Road, Manchester. Copyright Photo"

Born in Nantwich in 1907, Alfred P. Lythgoe was a centre-forward who joined Town from Stockport County in October 1934. He scored 46 goals in only 79 league and cup appearances before returning to Stockport in March of 1938.

Daily Herald official press photograph (1936)

Hugh Turner

And another press photograph of Town's famous custodian, this time with Reg Chester in the background. It looks like a training game at Leeds Road, and this time the press suggest that it is 1936 (Chester arrived in December 1935 and left mid-1937). Printed on the back are the words 'Daily Herald, 2 Chester Street, Oxford Road, Manchester'

Daily Herald official press photograph (1938)

Lewis Brook

Despite what it says on the back of this press photograph (Louis Drake) I have established that this is in fact Lewis Brook, who was born in Northowram in 1918. He joined Town from Halifax Town in 1936 and went on to play 18 senior games scoring 6 goals between 1937 and 1948, before transferring to Oldham Athletic in March 1948.

Daily Herald official press photograph (1937-1938)

George Wienand

"Daily Herald, 2 Chester Street, Oxford Road, Manchester. Copyright Photo."

George Wienand was born in South Africa in 1912, and signed for Town in August 1937 from Transvaal F. C. He appeared 32 times at outside-right for the first team in season 1937-38, scoring 3 league goals in the process, before moving to Hull City in October 1938. He remains Town's only ever South African player.

A. Wilkes & Son, official press photograph (c1946)

Arthur Thompson

Reverse reads "Thompson. A of Huddersfield T. F. C., (Copyright) (Copyright), A. Wilkes & Son, West Bromwich, Staffs."

Arthur Thompson was an inside forward from Dewsbury who made 10 appearances between 1946 and 1949, scoring just the one goal in that time. He joined Town from Thornhill Edge in September 1941, and retired in July 1949, aged only 27.

John Ward tells me that during this period,  every time Town played a game in the Midlands (Wolves, Birmingham, W.B.A.)  Wilkes took photographs of the entire team, so there should be plenty of these around!

A. Wilkes & Son, official press photograph (1947)

Alan Stewart

"Huddersfield F. C. 1947: A. Stewart: Copyright, A. Wilkes & Son, 45 Legge Street, West Bromwich."

Alan V. Stewart was a left-back born in Newcastle in 1922. He joined Town as an amateur in April 1940 and was transferred to York City in August of 1949, having played 15 times for the Town, scoring no goals.

Anonymous press photograph (1948/49)

Peter Doherty (followed by Jack Wheeler and A. N. Other!)

Irishman Peter D. Doherty was born in Magherafelt in 1913 and already had a glittering international career before he joined Town from Derby County in December 1946. Playing at inside-left, Doherty represented Town 87 times, scoring 36 goals, before moving to Doncaster Rovers as a player-manager in May 1949. Whilst on Town's books, he also played four times for Northern Ireland - against Wales (16th April 1947), England (5th November 1947), Wales (10th March 1948) and Scotland (17th November 1948); he also scored a goal in each of the first two games!

Jeff Taylor

"Arsenal versus Huddersfield:- SWINDIN the Arsenal goalkeeper punches clear during the match at Highbury today. JSS/KEYSTONE RBN/566429 Keystone Press Agency Ltd., 4-11 Red Lion Court, Fleet Street, London."

The date of the match is 16th September 1950, and Town lost the game 2-6.

Centre-forward Jeffrey N. Taylor played 71 times for Town, scoring 29 goals in League and Cup between 1949 and 1951. Huddersfield-born, he joined Town from the local YMCA team, and left to join Fulham in November 1951.

Sport and General Press Agency Ltd. official press photograph (1950)

George Hepplewhite

Writing attached to the reverse says,

"Football. The Huddersfield Town Team: F29855 A new portrait of G. Hepplewhite, Huddersfield centre forward (sic), 1950. Sport and General Press Agency Limited, 4 Racquet Court, Fleet Street, London E.C.4"

George Hepplewhite signed for Town in May 1939 but, thanks to the War, didn't make his debut until 1946. By the time he had moved to Preston in March 1951, he had made 165 League and Cup appearances for Town at centre-half, scoring 3 goals in the process.

Anonymous official press photograph (c1953)

Vic Metcalfe

No details on the back other than hand-written 'Huddersfield: Chas Buchan: Anonymous'

The person who sold it to me explained that it was one part of a lot which he had bought fifty years ago, which involved having to write to Charles Buchan magazine for them.

Victor Metcalfe was a Barrow-born flying outside-left who joined Town from Ravenscroft Boys Club in June 1940. He stayed until June 1958, when he moved to Hull City. In the interim he played 459 League and Cup games, scoring 90 goals. He also played for England twice whilst on Town's books; vs Argentina on 9th May 1951, and again ten days later against Portugal. He died on 6th April, 1996.

News Chronicle and Daily Despatch (London) official press photograph (1953) [reproduction]

Jimmy Glazzard

Strip of printed paper to the rear says ...

"Huddersfield Town v Everton. Leeds Road, April 7, 1953. Glazzard, Huddersfield’s centre-forward, heads the third goal in the 8-2 defeat of Everton. Glazzard scored four of his team's goals."

Jimmy Glazzard is a Huddersfield Town legend  - a centre-forward who worked down the pit on a Saturday morning, then climbed onto a bus to play for the team in the afternoon. The second-top scorer in Town history with 153 League and Cup goals, he joined Town as an amateur from Altofts Colliery in July 1943. He made 321 appearances before leaving for Everton in August 1956. Feared as much for his powerful shooting as his heading ability, his greatest moment probably came in the match featured in this photograph, when he scored four headed goals, all from left-wing crosses by his great pal, Vic Metcalfe.

Jim Glazzard died in Lindley, Huddersfield, in August 1996.

Anonymous official press photograph (1957)

Len Quested (and Brian Gibson)

This is very probably a Press Association photograph as the text attached to the reverse is very similar in style to several others that I have, and reads as follows ...

"CUP-TIE LEADER: Seen leading his men on to the field in this new picture is LEN QUESTED, wing-half and captain of Huddersfield Town, who meet non-League Peterborough in the fourth round of the F. A. Cup competition at Huddersfield on Saturday (January 26th). Folkestone-born Quested was transferred to Huddersfield from Fulham in November 1951 in part-exchange for centre-forward Jeff Taylor. He had joined the London club in 1943 while serving in the Royal Navy. January 24th 1957 PAR 61298-1 (Sh-R) FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF FRIDAY, JANUARY 25th. PLEASE RETAIN IN YOUR PICTURE LIBRARY"

Left-half Leonard W. Quested made 236 appearances for Town, scoring 9 goals. His Town career concluded with his emigration to Australia in July 1957.

Anonymous official press photograph (1959)

Kevin McHale

Printed text glued to the back says,

"SWIFT ON THE WING December 26th 1959 PAR 81151-2(Sh-R) Seen in action in this new picture is KEVIN McHALE, small but speedy outside-left of Huddersfield Town, who meet West Ham United at Huddersfield in the third round of the FA Cup competition on Saturday, January 9. A Yorkshireman born at Darfield (sic), McHale started his career on the ground staff. FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF MONDAY, DECEMBER 28th. PLEASE RETAIN IN YOUR PICTURE LIBRARY"

Mexborough-born John K. McHale joined Town from Darfield Folston School in May 1955, and went on to make 375 appearances, mainly at outside-right, scoring 68 goals, before moving to Crewe Alexandra in January 1968.

A. Wilkes & Son, 45 Legge Street, West Bromwich, Staffs. (1960)

Eddie Boot (Manager)

Press photograph dated 10th February, 1960.

Edmund Boot was a loyal servant of the Town club, appearing 325 times and scoring 5 goals in the period between his arrival from Sheffield United in March 1937, to his retirement in April of 1952. A renowned left-half, he appeared alongside such Town greats as Peter Doherty, Albert Bateman and Jimmy Glazzard. He moved on to be manager of the 'Stiffs', before taking temporary charge of the first team after Bill Shankly's move to Liverpool in 1959. He was a popular appointment as manager on January 19th, 1960, six days after the famous FA Cup victory at West Ham where he was in temporary charge. Boot resigned on 2nd September 1964, apparently disillusioned with the game.

(This photograph appears on page 72 of 'Huddersfield Town: A Complete Record 1910-1990')

Universal Pictorial & Press Agency (1965)

Mike O'Grady

Press photograph dated August 1965, although there are further dates stamped on it of 29 October 1965 and 22 September 1968, suggesting it was also used at later dates. Typed information reads ... "MICHAEL O'GRADY (114292) Huddersfield Town footballer."

Left-winger Mike O'Grady joined Town as an amateur in April 1958, turning professional in November 1959. With 174 appearances and 28 goals, he also achieved international honours with England at various levels before joining Leeds United in October 1965, soon after this photograph was taken in fact.

Anonymous press photograph (c1965-66)

Billy Legg

Absolutely no details whatsoever appear on this photograph, but I managed to identify Legg by comparing it with the teamgroup photograph in the 1965-66 Supporters' Club Official Handbook.

William C. Legg made 58 appearances for the first team between 1965 and 1969, when his Town career was cut short by a serious throat injury in a car accident in early 1969. He joined Bradford Park Avenue in April 1972.

Anonymous press photograph (c1965-66)

Billy Lynn

Once again, there are absolutely no written or printed details anywhere on this photograph, but again, I managed to identify the player by comparing it with the teamgroup photograph in the 1965-66 Supporters' Club Official Handbook.

William Lynn was a part-time professional with the club at this time, making just 4 appearances at first team level in the 1965-66 season, before joining Rotherham United in April of 1967.

Anonymous press photograph (c1965-66)

Kevin McHale

Again, there are absolutely no details whatsoever on this photograph, but it is clearly Kevin McHale.

Anonymous press photograph (c1965-66)

John Rudge

No written or printed details can be found on this photograph, although he is easily identified as John Rudge.

John R. Rudge joined Town in April 1960 but had to wait until the 1961-62 season before making his one and only appearance for The Stiffs. He then went on to make 5 appearances for the first team between 1963 and December 1966 when he was transferred to Carlisle United. He is best remembered as the long-time (and long-suffering?) manager of Port Vale.

Anonymous press photograph (1966)

Bolton Wanderers vs Huddersfield Town

Handwritten notes on the back identify this game as Bolton v Town, 10th September 1966, a game which Town lost 0-1. There are no details as to the press agency or newspaper.

For your information, that's John Oldfield keeping goal and Dennis Atkins at no. 2. The defender on the left looks like John Coddington, but I can't be sure.

Press Association Photos (1968)

Terry Poole

Writing attached to the reverse reads,

"HUDDERSFIELD KEEPER FROM MANCHESTER UNITED: TERENCE POOLE, young goalkeeper who joined Huddersfield Town from Manchester United last August. He made his debut in the Second Division side the following month in a League Cup replay against Manchester City. Terry is a native of Chesterfield. Dec 16th 1968: PAP 137189-1 (J-G): PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS: FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF MONDAY, DEC. 16th"

Still recognised as one of the best goalkeepers ever to play in a Town shirt, Terry Poole was the unfortunate recipient of two broken legs in Town's cause  In January 1971 he finally left the club to join Bolton Wanderers and his old coach, Ian Greaves, having made 231 appearances.

West Riding News Service Ltd. (1968-1969)

Paul Aimson

Writing attached to the reverse reads,

"Huddersfield Town centre forward Paul Aimson" and the address is 4 St. Peters Street, Huddersfield.

Aimson played 38 times in 1968-69, scoring 13 goals in the process. He was a bustling, hard-working striker who made way for Frank Worthington at a crucial point in Town's history. He moved on to York City in August 1969 where he became a legend. He died in January of 2008.

Aimson appears in this photograph in Town's highly unpopular all-blue top with white necks; oddly enough, these shirts are enjoying something of a revival in retro shops and can increasingly be seen worn on match days at the ground!

Anonymous press photograph (1968)

Bolton Wanderers vs Huddersfield Town

Press photograph, again anonymous, but this one has a date stamp of 26th October 1968, and the actual clipping from the newspaper which accompanied this photograph, saying,

"Huddersfield goalkeeper Poole punches clear a corner from Gordon Taylor at Burnden Park today."

Town won this game 3-2 with goals from Lawson, Dobson and Smith. That's Trevor Cherry jumping behind Poole, and Paul Aimson beneath Poole's outstretched fist.

Official PRESSPIX photograph (1969)

Jimmy Lawson

Text printed on the reverse reads as follows ...

"HUDDERSFIELD F. C. PS: Lawson. January 1969. Copyright Photograph of PRESSPIX, 111 Astra Drive, Riverview Park, Gravesend, Kent" and the date 11 March 1969 is printed as well.

Middlesbrough-born inside-forward Jimmy Lawson joined Town in May 1968. He was a true servant of Town, playing in the Division 2 winning side of 1970 before leaving for Halifax Town in the dark days of May 1976, having scored 46 goals in 254 appearances. His son, Ian, was to play for Town in the late 1990s.

Central Press Photos Ltd. (1970)

Frank Worthington

Text attached to the back reads,

"4.3.1970 Our new portrait picture of the centre forward with Second Division leaders Huddersfield Town ... Franck (sic) Worthington. Central Press Photos"

One of the most flamboyant players ever to appear for Town, Shelf-born Frank S. Worthington actually only appeared 187 times between 1967 and 1972, scoring 48 times. He was signed from Ripponden FC in April of 1964, and moved onto Leicester City in August 1972 when a proposed move to Liverpool fell through because of high blood pressure. Worthington later moved to Bolton and then began a host of involvements as manager and player-manager at several clubs, both league and non-league.

Press Association Photos (1970)

Geoff Hutt

Text attached to the back reads,

"HUTT OF HUDDERSFIELD: GEOFFREY HUTT, full-back with Huddersfield Town. He rose to senior football through the club's junior teams. March 18th 1970: PAP 144539-1 (Se-R): PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS: FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18th. PLEASE RETAIN IN YOUR LIBRARY." and there is a handwritten comment saying "Used 3-4-71"

Hutt joined Town in 1965, developing through the Juniors, before making his senior debut in April 1969. He stayed with the club through the sad decline of the 1970s, before moving to Dutch club Haarlem FC in June 1976. Famed for the wild inaccuracy of his shooting - one commentator famously said that the only people in danger when he chanced his arm were the pie-sellers! - Hutt appeared 277 times, scoring a meagre 4 goals, but he more than proved his worth as a tough-tackling full-back.

(This photograph appears on page 109 of 'Huddersfield Town: A Complete Record 1910-1990' and also in a Topical Times annual of the era)

The London Photo Agency (1970)

Arsenal v Huddersfield Town

Text stuck to the back of this photograph reads, "ARSENAL v HUDDERSFIELD 25th Aug 1970: OPS. Huddersfield goalkeeper Poole punches clear a point-blank header by Arsenal's George Graham. LPA/MONKS: The London Photo Agency Ltd., LPA House, Lambs Conduit Passage, London, WC1"

That's Roy Ellam lending a helping elbow, and at the far left is Jimmy Nicholson. The significance of this photograph is that at the time of this game, Town were three and a bit games into their first season back in Division One. Having already beaten Blackpool and Southampton, they then lost to Liverpool and were on their way to losing this game 0-1 with, I believe, Ray Kennedy's first-ever goal.

Official Press Association photograph (1970)

Jimmy Nicholson (and Geoff Hutt, Dennis Clarke's sideburns (!) and a grinning Les Chapman)

Text attached to the reverse reads as follows ...

"Jimmy Nicholson; Huddersfield, PA: A new picture of Huddersfield Town's Jimmy Nicholson who joined club from Manchester United in 1964. He's now rated one of the top wing halves in the country. A native of Belfast, he's won many Northern Ireland caps. October 24th 1970 PAP 147884-1(Ba-O) FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF SATURDAY OCTOBER 24TH 1970; PLEASE RETAIN IN YOUR FILE"

James J. Nicholson, a former Manchester United 'Busby Babe' remains Town's most-capped international player, with 31 appearances for Northern Ireland between March 1965 and October 1971. Jimmy left Old Trafford in December 1964 and went on to make 309 appearances for Town, most of those as club captain, before moving to Bury in December of 1973, by which time he had also scored 28 goals. A quality player.

Official Press Association photograph (1970)

Frank Worthington

Text attached to the reverse reads as follows ...

"ON STAGE Huddersfield, PA: A Mrs Worthington was once warned about putting her daughter on the stage, but here's Frank Worthington (Huddersfield Town) one of three footballing brothers who has made a success of the limelight on the soccer pitch. Frank, born Brighouse, Yorks., joined Town from school in 1966, and made a big impression last season as a striker.

October 24th 1970 PAP 147884-2(Ba-O) PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS: FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF SATURDAY OCTOBER 24th 1970" (Although there is also a stamp of 29 Jun 1972)

Provincial Press Agency (1970)

Jimmy McGill

Paper information stuck to the back say,

"HUDDERSFIELD TOWN J. McGill (Inside-left) 19.11.70 PLEASE KEEP: PROVINCIAL PRESS AGENCY, PINE GROVE, SOUTHPORT, LANCS."

Born in Partick, Scotland, in 1946, Jimmy McGill was a tenacious inside-forward who joined Town from Arsenal in September 1967. He made 180 first team appearances, scoring a meagre 8 goals before leaving to join Hull City in October 1971.

Press Association Photos (1970)

Steve Smith

Text attached to the back reads,

"HUDDERSFIELD FORWARD London, PA: Huddersfield forward, Stephen Smith - a local boy. Dec 16th 1970 PAP 148882-1 (Se-G) FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF WEDNESDAY, DEC 16th"

Midfielder Stephen Smith was not always recognised for the hard work that he did in the Town engine-room, but he proved himself to be a true servant to the club, returning as a coach and, briefly, a manager in the 1980s. He enjoyed two spells with the club, progressing firstly through the junior ranks in October 1961 before leaving for Halifax Town in 1977, having endured the drop through the divisions in Town's saddest period. He returned from Halifax in September 1979 and went on to make a total of 368 appearances, scoring 33 goals before retiring from playing in 1981. He managed the club from January 1987 to October of that year, to be replaced by the awful Malcolm Macdonald. He remains the only Huddersfield-born manager of the club.

Provincial Press Agency (1971)

Geoff Hutt

Typed information on the back of the photograph reads ...

"HUDDERSFIELD TOWN: G. HUTT (Right-back) 1.9.71 PLEASE KEEP"

A glaring error on this press photo which suggests that Hutt was a right-back when, in fact, he was one of the best LEFT-backs to have served the club in the past fifty years.

Press Association Photos (1971)

Dennis Clarke

Text attached to the back reads,

"CLARKE OF HUDDERSFIELD TOWN: Huddersfield, Yorks. PA: A new portrait of Huddersfield Town full-back Dennis Clarke, a former West Bromwich Albion player. Dennis is a Stockton man, who played for Durham County Boys before joining Albion as a youngster. Huddersfield signed him in January 1969. September 13th 1971: PAP 153361-2(Ba-O): FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF MONDAY SEPTEMBER 13th 1971"

Clarke epitomised the hard-tackling full-back of the era and made a total of 186 appearances and scored 4 goals before moving on to Birmingham City in September of 1973.

Press Association Photos (1971)

Roy Ellam

Text attached to the back reads ...

"ROY ELLAM OF HUDDERSFIELD TOWN: Huddersfield, Yorks. PA: A new portrait of Roy Ellam, who was one of only two Huddersfield Town players to appear in all 42 League matches in 1970-71. He was also ever-present in the Huddersfield team that won promotion from the Second Division in the previous season. Ellam, from Hemsworth, Yorkshire, made his name with Bradford City. He transferred to Huddersfield in January 1966. September 13th 1971 PAP 153361-1(Ba-O) FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF MONDAY SEPTEMBER 13th 1971"

Ellam enjoyed two spells at Town, beginning with the aforementioned transfer from Bradford. He moved to Leeds United in August 1972 as one of the 'Rebel Three' (the others being Worthington and Cherry) before returning in July 1974. He finally severed all ties in May 1975 when he joined the NSL's Philadelphia Atoms. In all, he played 253 games, scoring 10 goals.

Press Association Photos (1972)

Roy Ellam

Text attached to the back reads ...

"YORKSHIRE THRU' AND THRU' ... Huddersfield, Yorks. PA: A new action picture of Huddersfield Town half-back Roy Ellam. Born at Hemsworth, York, Roy previously played for another Yorkshire club, Bradford City. April 7th 1972 PAP 156427-2 (Ba-O) PAP: FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF FRIDAY APRIL 7TH 1992"

Right - forget the date on this one; it's most definitely WRONG, unless the date refers to a second printing of the picture perhaps to identify Ellam as one of the 'Rebel Three' who wanted Town to "pay up to stay up". Town actually played (and lost 0-1) at Arsenal on 22nd January 1972. That upper tier is certainly Highbury - compare it with the previous 1970 picture.

Press Association Photos (1972)

Les Chapman

Text attached to the back reads ...

"CHAPMAN OF HUDDERSFIELD: Huddersfield, PA: Leslie Chapman of Huddersfield, seen in action. A forward, he played formerly for Oldham, his home town. March 16th 1972 PAP 156141-1 (Ba-E) PAP: FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF THURSDAY MARCH 16th"

The exact date is February 26th, and we see Chapman firing in a shot in the F. A. Cup 5th Round match at Leeds Road when Town beat the Hammers 4-2.

Les Chapman joined Town from Oldham Athletic in September 1969 before returning there in December 1974. In between he made 139 Town appearances, scoring 10 goals from the left-wing berth, including a belter against Arsenal in their double year which Bob Wilson still talks about to this day!.

Press Association Photos (1972)

David Lawson

Text attached to the back reads ...

"HUDDERSFIELD TOWN GOALKEEPER: DAVID LAWSON: Huddersfield, Yorks. PA: A new portrait of Wallsend-on-Tyne-born David Lawson, goalkeeper of Huddersfield Town F. C. April 7th 1972 PAP 156427-1(Ba-O) FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF FRIDAY APRIL 7th 1972"

Signed from Bradford City in 1969 and for so long understudy to Terry Poole, David Lawson finally got his chance in 1971 after Poole's unfortunate leg-break. Lawson only appeared 51 times for Town before transferring to Everton in June 1972 for a then record fee for a goalkeeper.

Press Association Photos (1972)

Jimmy Nicholson

Text attached to the rear of this photograph reads as follows ...

"NICHOLSON OF HUDDERSFIELD A new portrait of Jimmy Nicholson, the Huddersfield Town half-back. Born in Belfast, his previous club was Manchester United. August 25th 1972 PAP 158255-1 (Ba-E) PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS: FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF FRIDAY AUGUST 25th. Issued with overnight service, but please retain for your files."

Press Association Photos (1972)

Terry Dolan

Paper information stuck to the back says,

"HUDDERSFIELD HALF-BACK: Huddersfield, PA: Terry Dolan, Bradford-born half-back with Huddersfield Town FC. October 20th 1972 PAP 158925-1(Ba-R) PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS: FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20th."

Midfielder Terence P. Dolan made his Town debut in October 1970, having signed from Bradford Park Avenue. He made 178 appearances and scored 16 goals before moving on to near neighbours Bradford City in August 1976. His later career involved managerial jobs at Bradford City and Hull City, but on applying for the job at Leeds Road on one occasion, his case was badly damaged by comments he had previously made as a visiting manager, where he had allegedly criticised the home support - fatal move! He was, however, to manage the Town 'Stiffs' in the 1990s.

John Saunders

Text attached to the back reads,

"HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FC - JOHN SAUNDERS: Huddersfield, PA: A new portrait of Huddersfield Town's John Saunders. Worksop born, he joined the Third Division club from Mansfield Town. September 21st 1974: PAP 167887-3 (Ba-S): PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS: FOR FIRST PUBLICATION IN EVENING PAPERS OF SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST 1974"

Saunders was a centre-half who, by the time that he moved to Barnsley in March of 1976, had played 133 times for Town and scored 3 goals. He sadly died in January 1998, aged only 48.

Paul Garner, Paul Cooper, Martin Fowler and Alan Sweeney

Text attached to the back of this reads,

"PLAYERS WITH HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FOR 1975/76, Tuesday, PA: Players with Fourth Division Huddersfield Town AFC for the 1975/76 season. At the club's Leeds Road ground are Paul Garner (top left), Paul Cooper (top right), Martin Fowler (bottom left) and Alan Sweeney. August 19th 1975 PAP 172399-8(Ba-S) PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS"

Paul Garner went on to enjoy a successful career at left-back before leaving Town for Sheffield United in November 1975, having made 106 appearances and scoring 2 goals; not so successful was Paul Cooper, a right-back who managed only 2 games in 1976 and left for Grimsby in May 1977; midfielder Fowler scored twice in 68 appearances before joining Blackburn in July 1978; Alan Sweeney, another right-back, played 70 times before drifting into non-league with Emley in July 1978.

Terry Dolan, Brian O'Neil, Jimmy Lawson and Steve Baines

Text attached to the back of this reads,

"PLAYERS WITH HUDDERSFIELD TOWN AFC Huddersfield, Tuesday, PA: Players with Fourth Division Huddersfield Town AFC for the 1975/76 season. At the club's Leeds Road ground are Terry Dolan (top left), Brian O'Neil (top right), Jimmy Lawson (bottom left) and Stephen Baines. August 19th 1975 PAP 172399-3(Ba-S) PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS"

Dolan we already know about; O'Neil was a tenacious midfielder who arrived from Southampton in October 1974 as Town tumbled down the League. He played 66 times, scoring 3 goals before moving on to Bideford Town as player-manager in June 1976; Jimmy Lawson has been documented elsewhere on this page; Stephen J. Baines was a hard centre-back who arrived in July 1975 from Nottingham Forest and played 131 times, notching 12 goals, before joining Bradford City in March 1978. After then enjoying a successful career in refereeing at Football League level, I last saw him selling insurance in Mansfield!

Frannie Firth, Dick Taylor, Lloyd Maitland and Wayne Goldthorpe

Text attached to the back of this reads,

"HUDDERSFIELD TOWN AFC PLAYING STAFF Huddersfield, Tuesday, PA: Playing staff with Fourth Division Huddersfield Town AFC for the 1975/76 season. At the club's Leeds Road ground are Francis Firth (top left), Dick Taylor (top right), Lloyd Maitland (bottom left) and Wayne Goldthorpe. August 19th 1975 PAP 172399-2(Ba-S) PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS"

Apprentices to the fore here as only Lloyd Maitland had any kind of 'form' as Town negotiated life in the bottom division. Francis M. Firth made 30 appearances as a forward before moving to Halifax Town in February 1978, having scored just 4 goals; Richard H. Taylor kept goal 119 times before his injury-enforced retirement in May 1982; winger Maitland arrived as an amateur from Coventry City in August 1972 and he moved on to Darlington in May 1977, having notched twice in 38 games; forward Wayne Goldthorpe performed quite well, with a healthy return of 7 goals in 21 starts, before leaving for Hartlepool in August 1978.

(The Taylor photograph appears on page 135 of 'Huddersfield Town: A Complete Record 1910-1990')

Peter Hart, Terry Armstrong, Peter Howey and Mick Fairclough

Text attached to the back of this reads,

"PLAYERS WITH HUDDERSFIELD TOWN AFC Huddersfield, Tuesday, PA: Players with Fourth Division Huddersfield Town AFC for the 1975/76 season. August 19th 1975 PAP 172399-5(Ba-S) PRESS ASSOCIATION PHOTOS"

Peter Hart was the Terriers' second youngest-ever debutant and by 1980 he was team skipper. His 227 games yielded 8 goals before his transfer to Walsall in August 1980; midfielder Armstrong played 36 times, scoring twice before moving to Port Vale in February 1981; Peter Howey scored 3 goals from his 26 games up front which earned him a move to Leeds United in July 1979; sadly, injury forced forward Mick Fairclough to retire in September 1975, only weeks after this photograph was taken, having scored 4 times in his 28 games for Town.

David Burke

Text attached to the back of this reads,

"CHELSEA VERSUS HUDDERSFIELD January 12th 1983 PAP 203838-1  (Sr-O) London, Wednesday, PA: Chelsea at home to Huddersfield for tonight's F. A. Cup third round replay at Stamford Bridge ground, and in action in this picture, Chelsea's David Speedie (right) and Huddersfield's David Burke.""

The game is a Cup 3rd Round replay at Chelsea on January 12th, which Town lost 0-2 having drawn the home game 1-1. And, just for the purists, that's a very blurred Colin Russell in the background.

Left-back David Burke, who joined Town from Bolton Wanderers in June 1981, suffered one of the most horrendous injuries in recent Town years when clattered by Jeff Hopkins of Fulham in March 1985, an injury which was pursued through the courts. He recovered in due course, but after playing a total of 223 games and scoring 3 goals, he was transferred to Crystal Palace in October 1987.

Brian Laws

"Universal Pictorial Press Photo (P 477295) Aug 1984: 30 34 New Bridge Street, London, EC4V 6BN: Fee payable on reproduction"

Born in Wallsend in 1961, right-back Laws joined Town from Burnley in August 1983. He stayed for two seasons before transferring to Middlesbrough in March of 1985, having represented Town on 66 occasions, scoring just the one solitary goal. From Boro, Laws went on to be a part of the greatest Nottingham Forest team ever, playing under the enigmatic Brian Clough. He has subsequently gone on to make a name for himself as a manager at Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe United and, more recently, Sheffield Wednesday.

Steve Doyle

Stamped on the back is "Huddersfield v Manchester City. Mick McCarthy blocks a drive from Huddersfield's Steve Doyle (right): VPA, 1 Manor Garth, Ledsham, South Milford, Leeds."

The date of the game in question is January 12th, 1985, and Town lost it 0-2.

Welshman Steve Doyle joined Town from Preston North End in September 1982, and he went on to make 184 appearances, scoring 6 goals before leaving for Sunderland exactly four years later. Never one to mess about in midfield, Doyle's tackles would always hit first and ask questions later!

World Copyright of Simon Miles, Allsport Photographic, 55 Martin Way, Morden, Surrey." Whilst the date, opponents and score is correct, the Town player identified is NOT; that's actually Simon Webster making the telling challenge, with Brian Stanton looking on.

Simon P. Webster, a powerful 21-years-old centre-half, had joined Town from Spurs in February of 1985. He was to make 132 League and Cup appearances for Town, scoring four goals, before transferring to Sheffield United in March 1988.

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (1991)

This set of photographs shows Town beating Crewe Alexandra 3-1 at Leeds Road on the 9th March, 1991. That's Gary Haylock running with the ball - or should that be falling over it? Kieran O'Regan seems suitably disappointed with Haylock's efforts!

Chris Marsden blasts a dead-ball towards the Crewe goal. O'Regan looks on, Mark Smith shores up the end of the Crewe wall and what looks like Haylock begins his run into space behind the wall.

Town try to force the ball home from a corner. that's Iffy Onuora grounded at the post, tumbling over the top of the keeper. I can't see the ball, so we have to presume that on this occasion the keeper made a save! Iwan Roberts (9) and Gary Haylock (10) look on.

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (1991)

Stamped on the back is "5 APR 1991 Queen Street South, Huddersfield"

Once again the date is out, as the game is Town vs. Stoke City on 6th April, 1991. Town took the game 3-0 with goals from Kieran O'Regan (pen), Phil Quinlan and Mark Wright. Here we see Kevin Donovan taking on the Stoke midfield.

Kevin Donovan was a right-winger who developed through the ranks at Town, signing professional forms in October 1989. He went on to make only 17 starts, scoring 3 goals, before signing for West Bromwich Albion in October 1992.

Here's the story of O'Regan's penalty. First of all we see the keeper diving to his right ...

... and then realising that he has gone the wrong way, vainly reaching across to push the ball away ...

... before it nestles neatly in the back of the net. That's Peter Jackson following-up to congratulate Town's goal-scorer.

Incidentally, in this season Town were awarded a record fourteen penalties in all competitions but contrived to miss four of them, so they didn't overhaul the record eleven conversions of 1983/84. O'Regan finished the season with 14 goals, ten of them from the spot.

... with the same result as the previous attempt. Unfortunately, O'Regan's goal was only a consolation for Town as Brentford went on to win the game 2-1.

And yet again O'Regan finds the back of the net from 12 yards, this time in the game against Bournemouth at Dean Court. But once again, Town wound up on the losing end of a 3-1 scoreline.

Trevitt again prompts another attack with a deft clearance.

Reliable right-back Simon Trevitt developed through the Town Juniors, making his debut in October 1986. He left for Hull City in December 1995, having played 272 times and scored 4 goals.

Gary Barnett on the run down the wing. I can't identify the game as it is right at the start of the season - judging by the date on the back, it must be a friendly game.

Wingman Gary Lloyd Barnett came to Town from Fulham in the summer of 1990. He made 120 starts, scoring 17 goals before moving on to Leyton Orient in August 1983.

Left-back Simon Thomas Charlton developed through Town's youth system, making his debut against Crewe on 3rd March 1990. He moved for big money to top division Southampton in June 1993, having made 155 starts and scored 2 goals for Town.

Rodney Rowe

Stamped on the back is "Rodney Rowe, Huddersfield Town, 20th February 1996" and the address 12 Castle Road, Scarborough, YO11 1XA.

This information pinpoints the game as the 2-2 home draw against Oldham Athletic, a match in which Rowe scored Town's second goal.

Frontman Rodney Rowe came through the ranks at Town; having signed schoolboy forms, he turned pro in July 1993 and made his Division 2 bow against Bristol Rovers on 30th October. He moved on to York City in February of 1997, having made very little impact at Town.

Steve Bruce

Not entirely sure of the date here as the back of the photograph bears the date August 2nd but no year. Details on the back read "Sitwell Centre, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO12 5EX Steve Bruce Huddersfield FC Manager 2nd August W58F6A" and the picture is credited to David Stewart.

Associated Sports Photography (ASP) press photographs (1995-1997)

These are actually all 10" x 8". The address on the back reads '21 Green Walk, Leicester, LE3 6SE" and also included is the date, which is when, I presume, the photograph was taken. They look very like the photographs used in the Town programmes of those seasons. There seems to be three series of these, spread over 1995, 1996 and 1997.
