W. E. Turton (Birkby) Player Portraits

Until the mid-1930s, W. E. Turton of Birkby were the official photographers of the Town team. I am informed that these cards were on sale only in the main stand at home games, costing a meagre 6^d! Team postcards are now often available on the internet and indeed a couple are shown on this website; but these studio portraits of individual players are generally much harder to come by, and in many cases the portrait is also autographed. Judging by the number of players on Town's books between 1908 and the late 1930s, there must be hundreds of these portraits out there somewhere, especially since the club also had photographs taken of players who never made it beyond 'The Stiffs'. I include these postcards as they are collectable cards, although I actually only own a few of them; in truth, I am indebted to Steve Exley for sending me scans of his fantastic collection, which makes up the vast majority of the portraits reproduced here.
