Huddersfield Town Books

Athough not cards or stickers, this section should appeal to most Town fans as it covers the various books available about the club. In many cases they have actually been produced by the club itself, but occasionally they are by independent writers/companies. I have not included programmes here, even though there are several famous Cup Final and Play-Off Final examples available, as there would be far too many to mention and depict; I have kept strictly to books and booklets, ones which no self-respecting Town fan should be without!

** Please note that the images are reduced in size so as to incorporate several on the page **

PHOTOGRAPHS, HISTORY, RECORD AND BLOTTER YEAR BOOK (1926)

An exceedingly rare A4-sized item which chronicles Town's second successive League Championship win of 1924-25. Included are photographs of the teams (First XI and Reserves) and the directors, together with a brief history of the club and fixtures for the coming season. My copy has newspaper cuttings stuck inside it, which obscure the first few pages, but are nevertheless an insight into press reaction to the FA Cup win and other events.

This occasionally turns up on eBay, but don't hold your breath!

SEASON 1925-26 SOUVENIR (1926)

This small concertina-style fold out booklet was produced to celebrate the winning of the Football League Championship for a then unheard of third consecutive season. Complete with statistics, photographs of the directors, players and trophies (the 'Stiffs' were Central League Champions for the second consecutive year too!) the club actually jumped the gun by one game, as the title was won with a game to spare, so there are no details for the final game away to Notts County, which the Champions lost 2-4.

Occasionally shows up on eBay, but again, only very rarely.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN OFFICIAL HANDBOOK 1908-1926 (1926)

Once again, a REALLY rare publication, this 88-page A5 sized book gives a history of the Town club from its humble beginnings in 1908 right up to the dizzy heights of being First Division Champions three times in a row. Laced with the usual team and director photographs, there are season by season reviews and, of course, many interesting adverts from the era.

Once again, you may find this on eBay, but you can expect to pay a hefty price for something which must be rarer than a Town Cup Final programme as there can't have been as many printed.

Look for it on eBay here.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 'COMING OF AGE' SOUVENIR BLOTTER, 1929-30 (1930)

To celebrate 21 years of Town being a Football League club, they brought out this souvenir blotter which has one short page of major facts leading up to 1929 (including the magnificent Triple Championship and the FA Cup Finals) and then features teamgroup photographs of EVERY season between1908 and 1929!

This is a real rarity.

TOWN REVIEW SEASON 1939-40 (1939)

A VERY small publication which is not as rare as some eBay sellers would have you believe, and can be picked up at a very reasonable price! This handbook was to be for the 1939 season which was of course disrupted by the war. Whilst Town only played the first three fixtures of this season, the book itself features a very brief history of the club, list of directors since 1908, Outstanding Gates & Results, International Players, League Positions, Trainers, Continental Tours details and the usual fixtures.

FOOTBALL HANDBOOKS, SERIES 1 No.11 (1946)

'LET'S TALK ABOUT HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB' by Tom Morgan

Once again, a REALLY rare publication, this 32-page slightly smaller than A5 sized book is actually quite a disappointment, in that there are only eight pages about Town itself. The middle section from pages 13 to 20 cover the club, including a nice series of pen-pictures as a centre spread; the remainder of the booklet is a collection of soccer snippets about other clubs and strange statistics about football in general. However, I do find it rather strange that any book about Town and its greatest players fails to mention the amazing record of Billy Smith; he appears in the pen-pictures in the centre, but nothing is said of his run of games in the team, or of the fact that he was the first player ever to score direct from a corner. Unforgiveable!

OFFICIAL HANDBOOK 1950-1951 (1950)

A 44-page A5 sized book complete with History & Milestones 1908-1950, pen pictures of directors, officials and players together with two team photographs and fixtures. An interesting addition to this handbook are the photographs of the burnt-out stand after the fire of April 3rd 1950, and the erection of the new stand.

Usually available on eBay, but usually at a reasonable price.

OFFICIAL HANDBOOK 1951-1952 (1951)

Very similar to the previous year in both design and content, this 36-page book even has the same photographs of the fire damage!

Often available at a reasonable price on eBay.

'THE PAST THREE SEASONS - TRAGEDY AND TRIUMPH' by Bill Carter (1954)

This small booklet spans the years 1951 to 1954, covering relegation from Division 1, the immediate return to the top flight the following season. Being a written commentary of those seasons, it also features a black and white team photo of the 1953-54 squad in the centre pages. Every stat that you could want from the three seasons is presented here, including fixtures, scores, scorers and team line-ups. The only problem is that it is rather difficult to read, written as it is in the somewhat archaic style of the 1950s. The author had begun as sports writer for the Manchester Evening News before moving to the Huddersfield Examiner, and his style is very similar to that of Des Loughrey who covered Town in the late 1960s and early 1970s. You have been warned ...

SUPPORTERS' ASSOCIATION JUBILEE YEAR BROCHURE (1958)

68-page book, slightly bigger than A5, this book contains messages from the Supporters' club and manager William Shankly, together with a quiz, a 50-year history article, player details, Town's complete FA Cup record, a list of FA Cup winners, and some past winners of the Miss Huddersfield Town contest!

Sometimes available on eBay, although can be pricey because of the 'Jubilee' element.

Look for it on eBay here.

SUPPORTERS' ASSOCIATION OFFICIAL YEAR BOOK 1959-1960 (1959)

A 56-page publication which contains a message from Bill Shankly, others from the Supporters' Club officers, the Laws of Football, season 1958-59 review, pen pictures, a team photo and several action shots. Oh - and Miss Huddersfield Town is there again!!

Sadly, the proof-readers failed to spot yet another mis-spelling of Denis Law's first name!

Often available quite cheaply on eBay.

SUPPORTERS' ASSOCIATION OFFICIAL YEAR BOOK 1960-61 (1960)

56-page item which is very similar in content to previous years, although the Manager's Message is now written by Eddie Boot, Shankly having departed for Liverpool. Photographs of players, team and action, another quiz and Miss Huddersfield Town are present once more. There is also a match-by-match set of statistics for the previous season.

Doesn't often show on eBay, but when it does you can expect to pay a reasonable price for this.

OFFICIAL HANDBOOK 1965-66 (1965)

Rather squarer in design than previous issues, this 40-page effort was the last club-produced handbook until the glossy efforts of the late 1990s. There are the usual player pen-pics, team and action shots, an overview of the forthcoming season's opponents, a little bit of club history, FA Cup Facts, Managers on the Climb, and a look forward to the 1966 World Cup. Nice item.

Shows up reasonably regularly on eBay.

CHAMPIONS DIVISION II 1969-70 SOUVENIR BROCHURE (1970)

Just smaller than A4, this book has only two pages of writing - messages from Frank Drabble (chairman) and Ian Greaves (manager) - the rest of the 24 pages being taken up with photographs of the players both posed and in action. There is also a page of stats detailing the successful season which saw Town promoted back to the top division.

A relatively rare item.

CHAMPIONSHIP BROCHURE 1979-80 (1980)

22-page A4 sized book which contains Mike Buxton's thoughts on the successful season, comments from coach John Haselden, player pen-pics, a review of the season in words and pictures, the fans, team photograph and stats for the season and fixtures for the upcoming season 1980/81.

Usually inexpensive when it appears.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 75 YEARS ON by George Binns (1983)

The first 'real' book written about Town. George Binns was the then-Secretary of Town, and he took on the huge task of writing about Town's first 75 years, and a fantastic job he made of it too! 434 pages filled with facts, photographs and statistics, this book is an essential read and often available on eBay and Amazon.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN - A COMPLETE RECORD 1908-1990 by Terry Frost (1990)

Often referred to as 'the Breedon book' because of its publishers, this is the ultimate book for Town fans; if you only ever read or own one Town book, it should be this one! 416 fact-filled pages containing photographs, pen-pics of famous players, managers, matches to remember, international players, club history, season-by-season match details, EVERY player's records, transfer details and records of leading appearances and goal-scoring feats make this an invaluable guide to our famous club.

But it comes at a heavy price - long out of print it fetches in excess of £20.00 on eBay - when it shows up!

LEEDS ROAD - HOME OF MY DREAMS by Ian Thomas (1994)

On 30th April 1994, Town played - and beat - Blackpool in the very last game at the Leeds Road ground. This book was produced by the club to commemorate that fact and is a lavish 114-page A4 publication filled with photographs and text, including reviews of the decades, kits down the years and peppered with photographs of collectible memorabilia. Stars of the past are brought to life and now with colour, this is a beautiful book. Fortunately, because it is quite recent, it is quite readily available.

OFFICIAL YEAR BOOK 1997-1998 (1997)

The first attempt at a handbook/year book since the 1965-66 season, this is an 82-page A4 book which contains pen-pics of the players, officials and management, an obituary for Jimmy Glazzard, Hughie Turner, and physio Dave Wilson. There is a full review of the previous season and fixtures for the upcoming one. Colour abounds and it's usually available quite cheaply on the internet.

THE HUDDERSFIELD TOWN F. C. STORY by Ian & Gwen Thomas (1998)

"Ninety-eight years in pictures and text" and that's exactly what it is! Black and white photographs throughout this A4 'landscape' book which has nine chapters, each documenting a decade in the club's history. Some super pictures here which don't surface in many of the other books about Town, this originally had a face value of only £1.99, and you can still pick it up on eBay now for around that price.

OFFICIAL YEAR BOOK 1998-99 (1998)

The last official year book produced by the club; perhaps those of this and the previous season did not sell well enough to merit further issues. As with the previous publication, this 82-page A4 book features player and officials pen-pics, a season review in text and photos, Looking Back 10, 20, 30 and 40 years ago, stats, fixtures and obituaries for John Saunders and Eddie Brennan.

Once again, not readily available, but when it does appear on eBay it goes cheaply.

ON THE EDGE by Tom Cowan and Andrew Collomosse (1998)

The story of fans' favourite, Tom Cowan's struggle to regain fitness from an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Cowan spent the entire 1997-1998 season in rehabilitation, and this is his story. Taking the form of a diary, the season unfolds game-by-game as does Tom's battle to regain full fitness. An excellent read, but not always easy to find. If you're lucky - like me - you'll get a signed copy.

SUPERCLUBS UNOFFICIAL SOCCER YEARBOOK 1998-99 (1998)

Not so much a book ABOUT Town as one that simply FEATURES the club. The first ten pages are filled with photographs and facts about the club - its history, honours, 1997/98 stats and player profiles, with colour pictures of the likes of Barry Horne, Lee Richardson and Marcus Stewart. The diary section features Town's fixtures for the 1998/99 season and chronicles the previous season, mentioning as it does Town's first home win of the season against Stoke City (and pictures Paul Dalton) and the win a couple of weeks later at Manchester City (together with a photo of Rob Edwards) The rest, I am afraid, is just a series of full-page and smaller photographs of First Division footballers from Nottingham Forest, Bury, Reading and so on. By no means essential, but completists might want to look out for it.

Once again, not readily available, but when it does appear on eBay it goes quite cheaply.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND by Chris Sentance (2001)

This is a 224-page diary of the season 2000-2001, a season which will live long in the memory of Town fans, as it was the year when a whole collection of freak results in that last week and on the final day conspired to send Town down to what is now League 1, and this is Chris Sentance's account of those dark days under Steve Bruce and then Lou Macari. A cracking read!

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN CHAMPIONS OF ENGLAND 1923-24, 1924-25, 1925-26 by Jim Brown (2003)

A season-by-season, match-by-match account of the most glorious three years in the club's history. Brown has worked hard to produce stats, details and photographs chronicling the days when Town were the team to fear. 192 engrossing pages - and he even reveals the fact that a Town official was murdered! Who? Well ... you'll just have to read it, won't you?!

THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL: AN A-Z  OF HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB by Tony Matthews (2004)

I had hoped that this 170-page book was going to be another essential buy, but it is actually not quite that as it is filled with small inaccuracies and some awful photographs - why could the author not find pictures of several Town players actually in Town kit? Instead we get Allison, Law, Mendes, Payton, Shearer and Yates in other clubs' kits! Actually, it's not that bad - arranged in alphabetical order, it gives loads of details about Town players past and present and has a few colour pictures in the centre. Oh, and it also gives the Town player with the longest name - but 4 pages earlier there is someone with even more letters in his name (if you're interested!)

THE FANS' FAVOURITES by Alisdair Straughan (2006)

Produced to coincide with the club's centenary season of 2008-09, this beautiful 200+ page A4 hardback book has double-page spreads featuring the 100 greatest players as voted for by the fans. You may disagree with some of the choices (Nathan Clarke is good, but a 'great'??), but the majority picked themselves; Stephenson, Billy Smith, Wadsworth, Mutch, Law, McHale, McGarry, Maskell, Shearer, Lillis, Worthington - the list is endless; well, actually it's not as you can see it's 100! Several of the pages are actually autographed too - and NOT pre-printed either! My only gripes with this book lie in the actual text, which features many spelling errors, several cases of words running into each other (i.e. missing spaces) and the same information being recycled for different players, a good example being the biogs of those players in the 1953-54 defence who played all season.

Currently available at the club shop for £19.99, it's a great buy.

 99 YEARS & COUNTING (2008)

If you thought that Terry Frost's book HUDDERSFIELD TOWN - A COMPLETE RECORD 1908-1990 (1990) was good, well, as they say - you ain't seen nothing yet! Frost's book was excellent but it had two major drawbacks; it is now very difficult to find, and it only chronicled the years up to 1990. This book, on the other hand, comes right up to date with stats for the 2006-2007 season included. What is more, it's not just fixtures, results and player records that you get here; no - you also get details such as Player of the Year awards, details of hat-trick and 4-goal hauls, Penalty Kings (even details of those awarded against Town!), Youth Cup results and a whole host of other Town minutiae. It would take too long for me to list all the aspects of Town's playing history covered here, but suffice it to say that everything you could ever want to know is in this book! Every page features a number of pictures and photographs covering Town's history, be it a programme cover, photographic postcard or even (joy of joys!) a sticker or cigarette card. In fact, I'm proud to declare that my name is printed on the page of contributors as I provided one or two items for inclusion.

Of course, a book of this size is not without its errors and it's a bit sad to report that there is a 2-page errata sheet inserted at the back, but this does not detract from what is a mammoth tome; 386 A4-pages guaranteed to grip every Town fan, young and old.

Currently available at the club shop for £27.99, it's a marvellous buy.

Buy it on-line at the club shop here.

 100 YEARS: ALL THAT'S WORTH KNOWING (2009)

Sub-titled 'FACTS & PHOTOS', this is the complementary edition to the excellent 99 YEARS & COUNTING and it was finally released in April of 2009. An truly superb production which can best be seen as an update to George Binns' marvellous 75 YEARS ON book. In fact, Binns had a hand in this book too, and it is organised in a very similar manner with season-by-season reviews, interspersed with short sections on the kit changes, the managers, the youth team, the reserves, etc. Unlike '99 Years', this book is not page upon page of stats; it's pure commentary and narrative, although there is a stats page covering the 2007-08 season which is an update for the previous book.

Absolutely loaded with 416 pages packed to the rafters with colour pictures and memorabilia, if you only ever buy one Town book, then it must be this one.  What a joy!

Oh, and it's got some of MY items in it too!

Currently available at the club shop for £29.99, it's a marvellous buy.
