Swindlehurst & Nicholson 'Huddersfield Town Players and Officials' trade cards (Trade Ref: ZB7-38)
| These cards are in
varying condition as you can see, but 23 of them have been autographed;
this reduces the value of the card to a collector, but to a Town fan it
can only increase their value. Imagine ... the autographs of Clem Stephenson and
Tom Wilson!! The strange story behind these cards is that they were given away free in the1935/36 season's programmes in an attempt to boost the sales. I don't know how effective they were, but I'm really glad that somebody thought of the idea!

Two strange ones here. Keen-eyed observers will notice that these are the same style as the John Sinclair set, but having nothing on the back makes them hard to positively identify. I include them here as they are probably misprints or part of a test-run. I have also taken the liberty of including them because the players in question are in Town kit, although both had by now moved on to new clubs, Kelly to Preston North End in 1932 and Mangnall to Birmingham City in 1934. |

2 pages from a booklet which required the collector to cut out and stick autographs published at a later date. Here the Alf Lythgoe autograph is complete. There is a second page featuring a Town player, namely W. G. Roughton who appears on the page of 'EXPERT DEFENDERS'. Interestingly, these pages were reproduced in 1997 by John Allen in a series of 25 cards called 'BLUE IS THE COLOUR'. Images of these cards can be found elsewhere on this site by clicking here. I am not exactly sure of the date for this item, but I am guessing at 1935 as the picture of Alf Lythgoe is similar in appearance to the one on the Topical Times cards of this year. |
