The baying of the hounds was getting closer, the princes hounds, the hunters... the hunters seeking to root out someone left over from history, someone out of place and out of time.
She wiped at the thin trail of blood winding it's way down Paul's cheek from his eye, she'd never felt so lost, so hopeless...
"It's time." he said, "we can't delay any more."
She nodded in reply, she couldn't stand to look at him, she could feel the bittersweet look in his eyes washing over her as she stood there in the small brook, the waters bubbling around their ankles.
A last kiss, a last taste. Paul leaned down and drank from her neck... so divine, her hands felt like claws rather than fingers as she just tipped her head back and let him feed... the last moment they'd share together, the last moment on this world at least.
Paul pulled away, his mouth brimming with her blood, she couldn't look up... she was trying to control the urges screaming though her senses to tear at him... she never recalled feeling this weak, this tired, this hungry.
"Go..." he said, "Go my myrneen-ven ... we will meet again, under the mothers eye... someday..."
She couldn't speak, she could barely move... a faint nod was all she could manage as feelings, hunger, fear tore at her last shred of free will calling at her to run, to fight, to feed... anything but what she knew she must do. And then, then she felt the warmth...? the presence of the earth rising up, up and around her to enfold her like a mother might hold its dearest child. Her screaming hunger faded, drifting off into the oblivion of darkness.
Back up on the surface Paul watched her go... he had to go too... the hunt needed a kill, the hunt knew there was a kindred in these woods to be taken... and so he ran, he ran off and down the stream; water splashing around him, away from the one person he still cared for..
The shouts were getting closer, voices in a language he couldn't understand. He heard someone else call out, calling into the night, louder and louder... and then he realised that it was him....
