The National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a challenge to write 50,000 words of fiction during the month of November.

2008 is NaNo’s tenth anniversary!

My first NaNo attempt was in 2006, with an execrable fantasy tale about a man who sought to join a band of ogres in an attempt to seek revenge on a cruel and despotic ruler. It was based on a dream I had a few days before NaNoWriMo officially started – which is never a good idea.

This steaming pile of fiction came to an early end, after my writing month was cut short by a bout of flu.

Undaunted, I returned to the fray in 2007 with an attempt to research the background for a fantasy world. I couldn’t squeeze much out, and there’s not even the flu to blame this time. Just too much research needed, and no sense of inspiration.

Bloodied but unbowed, I’m at it again in 2008. Will I make it this year?

The counter above will keep track of my progress. It will update every time I upload new text to the NaNoWriMo site, which will probably be every few days.

For NaNo 2008, I’m trying something with a little more structure. It’s called Zodiac, and is about someone who travels through all twelve signs of the Zodiac, having a mini-adventure in each.

If Zodiac comes out reasonably OK, I intend to make it the storyline of a computer game. So if it seems to read like the description of an adventure game, you can understand why.

If you’re a glutton for punishment, click here to see what I’ve scribbled.
