Clerk's Piece

View of the River Granta. The lack of marginal plants would suggest that the channel has been recently cleansed in some form. The establishment of diverse marginal habitats would be of benefit to local biodiversity. However, any alteration to the bank-form must be carefully balanced against the need for floods to pass through.

Views of Clerk's Piece. The areas of grass could be enhanced for the botanical interest and managed to suit a wider range of invertebrates such as butterflies. Bat and bird boxes could be attached to suitable trees. Spring bulbs could be planted to provide early sources of nectar.

A brown trout was observed in the section of river downstream of the bridge. Trout are a good indicator species of clean water and habitat diversity. Wild brown trout populations have suffered through the effects of abstraction, pollution and habitat degradation. The occurrence of trout together with minnows, and the kingfisher, is a good sign.
