The continuing wet weather caused the postponement of five of the eight Sam Ashworth Trophy second round matches, but Ashton Town and Queen Lizzie did manage to fit in a rearranged Division 2 league game.
Depleted Division 3 side Ram United, with only 63 year old Reg Fallding as sub, took Division 2 high fliers Victoria to extra time. Ram were on top for most of the ninety minutes when the score was 3-3, but they ran out of steam in extra time and lost 4-3. Scorers for Ram were Steven Hughs (2), plus an own goal, whilst Malcolm Dunne (2), G.Lee and R.Worley were on the mark to give Victoria the victory.
Division 1 Dobbies A overwhelmed Ainsworth B, rooted at the bottom of Division 3, by twelve goals to nil with Martin Kojder scoring five.
In the other surviving Trophy match, Martyn Jones scored twice for Division 3 Ainsworth A to beat Division 2 Bromley Cross 2-1.
The rearranged Division 2 league game between Ashton Town and Queen Lizzie ended in a 2-2- draw and the point raised Queen Lizzie to second in the table on goal difference. Although Ashton are now level on points with Bromley Cross, they remain bottom on goal difference, but they do have a game in hand. Ashton were on top for most of this game and were 2-1 up with five minutes to go, but Queen Lizzie levelled to get a lucky draw despite Ashton hitting the post and the bar in the dying seconds. Dave Cunliffe and Neil Jenkins scored for Ashton whilst J.Hughs and J.Russell replied for Queen Lizzie. |
