The photographs on this page are courtesy of Don
Harvey (Sydney, Australia). Don used the plans available on this
website to scratch build this excellent model of a steam launch.
Don agreed with my request to post the pictures of his steam launcht
at various stages of construction.
Don's comments...................
I scaled the plans down in Autocad from 30"
(762mm) overall to 660mm to suit the Steamco engine. Planking is
single plank 2mm thick and there is no fibreglass but 8 coats of
polyurethane inside and out. No discernible leaks at this stage.
It was my first planked model and I feel I have learned a lot including
patience. I don't have the final weight at this stage but I did
add some lead sheet ballast under the prop shaft to collect and
water/oil from the engine. It still requires finishing touches but
will be named Sooty after my daughter's cat and needs a permanent
stand. Radio control on the rudder is housed under the hatch and
power source under the bow hatch. Deck is 1mm marine ply and scribed
(I realise the decklines should be curved - but is my first effort.
With fuel tablets it achieves about 9 minutes running time and has
been steamed up on a pond.
I will send a "sailing" photo soon.
