COLIN SANDERS
Colin is currently recovering from a stroke in a Florida hospital. He was living in Dade City, Florida, where he
had helped to build a speedway track and suffered the stroke whilst riding his
speedway bike there. Before his illness, Colin told me, "I ride speedway bikes every Thursday night. The last time I got on a bike
was 1971, until three years ago! As I am the only one here with speedway bikes,
I ride with the Flattrack guys. As crazy as it sounds, I think I'm faster now
than I was back in the day!!! We had a cop here the other night and he clocked
me with a radar gun at 62 mph on the back straight! It would be really
interesting to find what all the other guys are doing now".
BOB COLES
Like Colin Sanders, Bob
is still riding speedway bikes - this time, in Spain, where he now lives. He's
involved with the "Motospeedway Academia de Espana" project to build a
track in the south of the country and provide a training facility. There are
pictures of Bob in action at the track on their website - click

PHIL WOODCOCK
In an interview for the
"Defunct Speedway Tracks" book on Romford, Phil said that he was
working in the building trade in Dorset, with another ex-Bomber, Mike Vernam.
Allegedly, Phil also now plays bowls in the Bournemouth area - a bit more sedate
than speedway!
MIKE SAMPSON
Mike Sampson lives in
Devon, where he runs his own business as an electrical engineer
MIKE VERNAM
Mike is running a
successful car accessories business with outlets in and around Bournemouth. For
a while in 2004, Mike returned to speedway as team manager of Conference League
club Weymouth Wildcats before increased business commitments caused him to give
up the role.
FRANK WENDON
According to the Canterbury
Crusaders website, Frank is working as a cradle engineer on tall buildings.
His interest is now classic cars and, for those who remember Frank as the fresh-faced,
youthful rider back in 1969 - he's now a grandfather!
BRUCE EDGAR
My thanks to Bruce's son, Dylan, for informing me that Bruce is now living in
Australia.
MAURICE MORLEY
Now retired from speedway
management, Maurice and his wife are living in Essex - not too far from Romford!
WALLY MAWDSLEY
Former Bombers promoter
Wally Mawdsley was still involved in speedway up until the closure of Canterbury
in 1986. Wally and his wife still live in Kent.
