The history of Romford's speedway team, the Romford Bombers, is recorded in this website, from its formation as Rochester Bombers in 1969 through its successful transfer to Brooklands Stadium, Romford and its ultimate demise as West Ham Bombers in 1972. All the results, League tables and statistics are here, along with details of every rider that wore the famous Bombers' Roundel. Revive memories of Thursday evenings at Brooklands from the photo's of the riders, programmes and memorabilia that can be found here!

BOMBERS BOOK

Two Romford-based authors, Paul Hiscock and Tony McDonald (editor of Backtrack magazine), are producing a new book, entitled Romford Speedway The Brooklands Bombers (1969-71), to mark the 40th anniversary of when speedway came to town and attracted regular 5,000 crowds throughout the summer.
The 240-page book, priced £15.00, will cover the brief three-year history of speedway racing at the old Brooklands Stadium, including new and exclusive interviews with past Bombers riders and management, comments from visiting riders, plus season-by-season reviews, statistics and many previously unseen photographs.

Can You Help?

I am still on the lookout for photos and other memorabilia that can be scanned or photographed and added to the website so, if you do have anything suitable I would be interested to hear from you. I'm still seeking portrait photo's of Adrian Baker, Ron Edwards, Mike Holt and Brian Read - even the small "thumbnail" photo's that appeared in programmes would be fine.

COLIN SANDERS: Updated 17/2/08
Former Bombers captain Colin Sanders is back in the UK and undergoing medical treatment in Poole General Hospital after suffering a severe stroke last year whilst riding a speedway bike at the Dade City track in Florida. Colin's sister says he is "severely disabled and on 24 hours-a-day care. He has no feeling down his right hand side but has some movement down his left. Colin is fed through his stomach and can't speak. But he seems to understand what people are saying and smiles a lot." Colin has received numerous messages since being hospitalised and is said to be amazed that so many people still remembered him from his grasstrack, speedway and cycle speedway days. Further messages would help him greatly and they should be sent to Colin Sanders, Portland Ward, Poole Hospital, Longfleet Road, Poole, Dorset, BH15 2JB
