Bombers Book

CALLING all former fans of Romford Speedway...

Two Romford-based authors, Paul Hiscock and Tony McDonald (editor of Backtrack magazine), are producing a new book, entitled Romford Speedway The Brooklands Bombers (1969-71), to mark the 40th anniversary of when speedway came to town and attracted regular 5,000 crowds throughout the summer.

The 240-page book, priced £15.00, will cover the brief three-year history of speedway racing at the old Brooklands Stadium, including new and exclusive interviews with past Bombers riders and management, comments from visiting riders, plus season-by-season reviews, statistics and many previously unseen photographs.

The authors are also keen to record the memories of supporters who used to enjoy their speedway at Romford on Thursday nights between 1969 and the sad closure following a protest on noise grounds that went to the High Court at the end of 1971.

Send your thoughts on Romford Speedway to Tony McDonald at: Retro Speedway (Bombers Book), 103 Douglas Road, Hornchurch, Essex, RM11 1AW. Alternatively, email him at

He wants to record your memories - good and bad - about speedway at Romford. It could be a memorable race/meeting, your favourite rider and why, or something quirky about the place and what Thursday nights at this old track meant to you personally. Where you stood, the people you met, the unforgettable characters of Romford Speedway.

The most interesting and entertaining submissions received will appear in the book itself, so there's a chance for you to see your name in lights in a publication to further preserve the history of the Romford Bombers. The book will be published in October 2008 and fans are asked to submit their comments and memories by no later than July 31
