Stewardship

Saint Luke's has an active Stewardship committee.

We are a Certified Fair Trade Church, support a local womens refuge and a local centre for the homeless.

We believe it is very important to look after the gifts that God has given us and to pass them on to future generations. To this end we try to reduce the effect of our ecological footprint where ever possible. We have done this by becoming more energy efficient by fitting a new boiler, CFL lighting, draft excluders, encouraging the shutting of doors and turning off lights when not in use. This reduces our expenditure and ultimately reduces carbon emmissions which in turn reduces the damage we do to the environment.

We think that the sustainable development of communities, local and worldwide, is also extremeley important. Sustainable development is a phrase that has been subject to a wide number of definitions and interpretations. The 1987 Brundtland Report “Our Common Future”, published by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development, defined sustainable development as:"development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

At a local level, sustainable development includes:

• living sufficient and equitable lifestyles

• locally sustainable communities and economies

• using resources efficiently

• minimising waste and pollution

• participation by people in decision-making processes

• taking responsibility now to ensure that the needs of future generations can be met.

If we don't take responsibility for our actions now we are letting our children and future generations down.

DON'T CHEAT YOUR CHILDREN !
