The Speakers

Samuel Zygmuntowicz

The STRAD 3D Project

Combining Technology and Traditional methods to study the Titian Stradivari and the Plowden Guarneri

This study presents the first 3D modal vibration study of two great Cremonese instruments, creating intriguing animated images of the violin in motion. In addition these violins were studied with CT scans, hi-resolution photography, musical recordings and more traditional measurements and thickness graphing. The focus here will not be on technical analysis, but rather on an expanded understanding of the complete violin.

Building and Developing Tonal Quality

Sam will describe his progress though the cycle of making instruments and working with players in order to understand and develop the tonal quality of his instruments.

Samuel Zygmuntowicz was already a prize-winning sculptor before beginning his instrument making studies at age 13. He has studied making and restoration with Peter Prier, Carl Becker and Rene Morel. Since 1985 he has worked independently in Brooklyn, New York, making new instruments by advance commission, and working actively with performers such as Isaac Stern, Cho-Liang Lin, Joshua Bell, Maxim Vengerov, Yo-Yo Ma, and the entire Emerson String Quartet. In addition to his extensive studies of traditional violinmaking, he has worked closely with acoustic researchers Norman Pickering and Oliver Rodgers, and is currently on staff at the Oberlin Violin Acoustics Workshop. He is creative director of "STRAD 3D" , an upcoming DVD featuring 3D laser vibration studies of Stradivari and Guarneri violins led by physicist George Bissinger.

John Holloway

More than 270 years after the death of Antonio Stradivari, his instruments are still regarded as the pinnacle of violinmaking achievement. The world has changed a lot since these instruments were made. What do we know about the expectations of musicians in those days? Who were Stradivari’s customers? What was the repertoire for the violin and how has violin-playing changed since then? Some questions are easier to answer than others but John will shed some light on this interesting subject.

At 6pm John will give a one-hour public concert of “Music from the time of Stradivari.”

John Holloway is one of the pioneers of the modern “Early Music” movement in Britain. He played his first public concert in aid of Hungarian refugees in 1956 at the age of eight. John Holloway has held many prominent teaching positions including Professor of Baroque Violin at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and Guest Professor at the Schola Cantorum in Basel and at the Early Music Institute at IU Bloomington, Indiana. Since 1999 he has been Professor of Violin and String Chamber Music at the Hochschule fόr Musik in Dresden, Germany. John has made over eighty recordings (winning a Gramophone Award in 1991) and regularly performs in Europe and the United States. www.johnholloway.org

This year, to mark the establishment of the UK branch, the LUTHERIE seminar will be promoting the work of Luthiers Sans Frontieres.

LSF is a small international organisation founded in Belgium in 2001.

It began with a repair project run by two violin makers, an American and a Belgian in schools in Havana, Cuba. From this it was clear that many talented musical children lack properly repaired and maintained string instruments.

LSF was set up as a permanent organisation to send more trained violin and bow makers to countries where these services are lacking. These volunteers are trained professionals who are willing to visit the developing world to work on instruments and share their expertise.

LSF now has a UK section (LSF UK) which will organise its own funds and plans to set up projects in new countries where there is a need.

What will LSF UK do?

Send volunteers to provide repairs services to musicians, schools, orchestras etc

Provide training for local instrument and bow repairers.

Provide tools and equipment for local workshops.

How can you help?

Become a member of LSF UK

Donate funds, tools, fittings, bow hair etc.

Become a volunteer repairer of trainer.

Information will be available at LUTHERIE 2008 which will also be a collection point for donations of fittings, tools and, of course, money.

Alternatively you can contact LSF UK here:-
