Way up north in Notts after Elvaston decided they'd rather play in the National Village league quarter finals than us, it was a 40+ mile journey, but a beautiful setting to get to. Out in the country, mansion houses, tea on the lawn, jolly spiffing.
Jamie lost the toss and Wiseton batted. With the score not reaching 50 after 20 overs this was a reflection on 3 things. Good bowling (take a bow AG, 8-4-5-0), an indifferent pitch with a long grass outfield, and some test match type batting. After drinks it all seemed like a different game and they got to 138-8. Highlights (or should that be lowlights?) were an awesome drop by Steve "Cymbals" Gaunt (stumping in Birdys absence) straight in the air, straight to ground, through the gloves (Steve was, it must be said, distraught. The rest of us were just highly amused); Crossy deciding not to catch everything that came his way (2 drops); and Alec reaching up for a catch only for it to come down out of his grasp, straight on top of his head. I don't think I've laughed so much in ages! A tidy but variable spell by Crossy, culminating in a final over of 2 stumpings, a hat trick ball and 2 run outs were the highlight, Paul chipping in with throw of the season to aid one of the run outs.
One tea later, the batting order looked distinctly topsy turvy. Luckily AG only lasted one ball (the Gaunt/Smith family going for bulk purchase discount on Primary Club ties) with debutant Mark Brennan taking his time over 5. Steve Gaunt clubbed 31, Adam flashed like a primary school pervert for 2, and Jamie missed out on 13. Crossy did his average no harm with 38 not out and Hibbo steered us home with a huge 6.
Drinkies at the village local and off we went. Maybe next year?
