Our now annual dav at the seaside was no different this year. Save the coach, but enough of that. Jamie won the toss and we fielded to much the same kind of side we faced the past 2 years, mixtures of age and accents being the theme.
The story of the Skeg innings was Crossy. 4 catches in the outfield, including a screamer at gully, 2 feet off the ground, full stretch vertically, that will definately be up there for Champagne moment come the end of season. He was just awesome. First was a corker at first gully, shoulder high (we spent most of the day with 2 gullies downwind) second a fair dolly round the corner, third THAT catch and fourth on the boundary to get rid of the Aussie, having planted himself and deep square the over before. Get his lottery numbers.... Dean bowled quick but variable, Alec celebrated probably his last "full time" game for the club with a masterly 3fer, Mick Stewardson got another 3fer, and AG didn't get what he deserved.
After tea and hot sponge cake (great stuff) we opened up with Steve and Paul. After 1 over we were without Steve, who only heard ball on wood when he was bowled fourth ball. Golden fingers Cross managed 8 before he went, but this bought Jamie and Birdy to the crease. Birdy seems to bat better against better bowling and got to fifty quite sharply, another great little knock. Then Steve Gaunt gave him LBW in controversial fashion and the game was set for a grandstand finish. Then it all went pear shaped. Rob, Dean, Alec and John Newton came and went quickly (10 between them) and it was left to Andy Gaunt to try for the final 4 runs required in the last over. The tension was almost tangible as Andy faced the first ball, and promptly put it down points throat, for a bothersome ending to a great match.
There's always next year...
