DCC Vs KEGWORTH CC

Kegworth, Leics,  2nd June 2002

Report by our man in the field, as it were, Smudge.

DORCHESTER STREAK TO VICTORY DESPITE PITCH INVASION

Weather - warm and sunny enough for a BBQ.

Pitch - hard but not particularly fast.

Super setting for a game of cricket despite a load of pissed up footy fans deciding to celebrate (?) England's apparently lack lustre start to the World Cup with a BBQ in a back garden adjoining the ground.

Anyway, Jamie did his tossing percentage no harm at all and we had a bat. Paul and Steve set off at a cracking pace and Steve fell just short of a 50. Paul continued and ended up with a top notch 74. While Paul was in the middle with Crossy, one of the neighbours, who'd obviously had a few too many, stripped off and streaked across the ground, much to most people's amusement. The general consensus was that this was the first time a streaker had graced a Dorchester match. Beryl, where were you?

The game soon continued and Crossy reached 50, much to everyone's surprise who couldn't remember him scoring a dozen, yet alone 50. Crossy himself had to check to make sure we weren't winding him up. Crossy went on to score 65 and with Dean scoring 19 and Jamie 14, that was about all the scoring there was. The less said about my golden the better. So we finished on 260 for 8 against some average bowling.

Kegworth's reply was typically Kegworth. Three or four decent batsmen and a bunch of kids. Alec picked up a couple early on while Andy struggled with his line. Mick and John then came on and Mick got 2 in 2 balls, including their opener.

After 24 overs, however, about 10 of the aforementioned footy fans, combined intelligence similar to the primitive pond life that lives at the bottom of my garden, decided to stroll to the middle to cause trouble, at which point some players left the field. Two of them had already been challenging each other to rugby tackle Dean for a tenner and it was only when they got close enough that they realised that they wouldn't be able to manage it between them, let alone on their own. There was a stand-off in the middle for a short time before the footy fans disappeared down the pub. Their last recognised batsman had already decided by this time that he'd had enough and was on his way home when it was decided that the game should be finished.

A bit of a non-event from there on with everyone getting a bowl and Crossy getting the only wicket in his annual quest to end the season with the best bowling average. It's a good job he's not allowed to bowl 50 overs a season and therefore qualify for the bowling award.

Kegworth ended on 171 for 5 so we won by lots.

DCC 260-8 in 40 overs (Crossy 65, Paul 74)
Kegworth 171-5 in 40 overs

PS Mustn't mention Smudgers golden......
