Kegworth, Leics, 17th June 2001
Paul won the talk and we batted. The man's a legend.
Weather : Cloudy and close. Damp pitch.
After a Friday of near torrential rain, we were lucky to get anything, but play we did, on a green looking pudding of a track.
A decent side out was strong with both bat and ball, and Paul, returned from hols, and Jamie opened up. Paul played on for only 7, which bought Jamie and Crossy together. Some nice shots and lusty blows were ended when there was, to put it politely, a mixup. Opinion is divided on the facts; Jamie thought there was never a single there, the rest of thought there was, he should just have started running quicker, and not faffed around....... Rob came in at 4, and despite some decent leg and off spin, he and Crossy started to get some on the board, 21 coming from one particular over. Rob dibbed, dobbed and slogged to a useful 31 (thereby surpassing his entire 2000 run output in 4 innings in 2001) before succumbing to a fiendish slow full toss on leg stick, lbw in a travesty of a decision. (Opinion is divided on the matter, see above...) Crossy went form strength to strength, but fell 5 short of a ton, for the 3rd straight score at Kegworth of 90 odd. Griff hit a dashing cameo (no red codpiece though) including a huge 6 to the long boundary, Ben lasted only 1 ball unfortunately, Smudge only 2, and we ended up on 239. Always likely to be enough.
So it turned out. Regular wickets fell during the Kegworth innings, with only numbers 4 and 5 looking in good nick. However, it took us a good few overs and boundaries to figure that the righthander could play happily in the V all day, and Benno lost it completely to a 14 year old. Fun and frolics. Once these two were out of the way, it was damage limitation for Kegworth, and DCC won by a street or two in the end. Smudge's bandit threefer the pick of the bowling, and Griff's run up promising much..
Off to the Cap to finish it off. Oh, and Birdy, I'm sure Crossy called you " a bit of a fit ba&*%$d". I'm sure that's what he said.....
DCC 239-9 in 40 overs (Crossy 95, Jamie
43)
Kegworth 163 all out in 37 overs (Smudge 3-28)
