DCC V Car Colston
Car Colston, Notts 25th May 2003
First time out at Car Colston, traditional village green
with cows on 2
sides and a pub facing, but with a very low slow damp wicket, so no
surprise that our normal batting charge was pinned back after winning the
toss ( heads from the on time VC - Andy Gaunt). The batting order was
predominantly determined by who turned up on time and on paper it looked
very strong, captain Ian placing himself at 7. Steady progress was made, 20
odd from Steve Gaunt, but Jamie & Nick missed out, leaving at the other end
Steve Perry pushing, carving and smashing a well made 62. After a gap of 5
years or so Ian Gould made a welcome return to DCC, and crafted a
creditable 41, latterly working in partnership with Paul going in at six.
It was at this sort of time that the continual chirping, sledging and
drivel coming from 1st slip ( in particular ) and the keeper was at its
peak. Understandable for talented Notts Colts type stars of the future, but
not so for 30plus Joe Clubman cricketers, playing on the village green in a
friendly type match. Nevertheless come-upppance was around the
corner.........
The innings closed with a cameo 43n.o. from Paul, only 4 of which was on
the off side (evidence of trying to slog) and solid support from Captain
Ian at the end took us through to 200 for 5.
This was Dean Blake's day, on the slow low wicket he conjured a magic
spell, running down the slope leaving the batters not over keen. His
figures of 7-5-2-5, were a real credit to him, a wide and one scoring
single in 43 balls grabbing 5 wickets including a tremendous full length
caught and bowled really was a super effort. Opener Foster weathered the
storm with a strong 36, albeit generally facing an out of sorts Andy Gaunt,
but there was little other resistance with the bat. The two prize chirp
wickets were opener Dable lbw Blake 0 (assisted by Crossy - you'll have to
ask him) and 1st slip Pearce ct Taylor (there is a God) b. Bennett 0.
At the end CCCC (great initials) were 93 all out, including 5 ducks. Did we
mention that the 2 biggest gobs both got big, fat ducks?
Good win for the good guys. Moral of the story - Enjoy your cricket, if you
can't take take it down give it out! (chirp is cheap).
