Free online Flash game -- Space Ace.

One of my favorite online games, is Pax Galaxia (not freeware), a strategy game, which I like because you can play online, against other players, even if you have a dialup connection.
Space Ace is more of an arcade type game, where you steer your ship around a variety of levels, collecting white circles. A map of each level is shown at the top left of the screen.

In the practice mode, you collect all the white circles, to complete the level against the clock.
But, far more interesting is the "ranking" mode, where you compete against another player. Whoever collects the most circles wins the round and the first to win five rounds, takes the match.
You start off with a ranking in the thousands, but as you defeat opponents, your ranking improves, I'm currently ranked 230.

Space Ace has very simple graphics and sound, with just a few particle effects as you explode. But this simplicity ensures that the game plays well over a dialup connection.

I've had quite a bit of fun playing Space Ace, mainly I think, because I'm getting pretty good at it. There is usually someone online to play against, but if not you can practice the level for a few minutes, until another ship appears.

You will need Flash enabled in your browser and loading time should be less than one minute, on a 56K connection.
